Children's Literature - Gina Hagler
How to Improve at Fishing delivers what you specifically need to know to fish in lakes, rivers, and/or the sea. The different locations and the habitats they provide for various types of fish start the book. A close-up look at lake fishing and the different types of rods and reels used follows, with clear photos and excellent descriptions. Photos and detailed diagrams of bait options, hooks, and the knots used to tie them to the line are next. The section about lake fishing closes with photos and info about floats and weights, casting, landing a fish, and knowing when there is a fish on the line. The next pages cover fly fishing. There are detailed looks at the rod and reel, the fly and how to cast, before moving on to sea fishing. The photos of the equipment and bait for this venue are also excellent and include pages devoted to fishing from the shore or from a pier. All the equipment, bait, knots, and casting descriptions are given in such detail, accompanied with photos, that a teen can use them for skill improvement. The detrimental effects of pollution are touched on before moving on to the rules and requirements for a license. Diet/fitness and safety each have their own sections. A peek at how the pros do things, a glossary, and an index finish up the book. How to Improve at Fishing is part of the "How to Improve at —" series. Reviewer: Gina Hagler
