Children's Literature - Gina Hagler
How to Improve at Judo is an excellent book for any teen who is into judo. Clear instructions are coupled with striking photos of teens demonstrating each step to make excellent use of the photo essay format. It is all covered so well that a teen can use this book to master the moves shown. And this book covers everything. From detailed views of the equipment and a thorough look at and discussion of the different belts—and how to tie them—to conventions at the dojo and what to expect at a competition. Want to know what to do to warm up? It is in here along with skills like breakfalls, throws, and holds. Tournament rules are explained in detail. There is a section about good nutrition and why it matters for judo, as well as suggestions for foods to eat before and during training. The essential components of a positive mental attitude, a peek at how the pros do things, a glossary, and an index finish up the book. How to Improve at Judo is part of the "How to Improve at —" series. Reviewer: Gina Hagler

Gr 4–8—Students will find plenty of advice here on stances, moves, and even how to eat right for competition. After a short introduction to the sport and the basics of competition, the book launches into performing the moves, giving step-by-step instructions for throws, pins, and choke holds. The images use arrows to show the direction of movement, a technique that largely works to describe what both partners should be doing, and that will be enough for students already studying judo. Unfortunately, the book does not stress the importance of practicing with an instructor, and some of the more advanced techniques could be dangerous if tried alone. A short section describes tournament rules.—Alana Abbott, James Blackstone Memorial Library, Branford, CT
