    A gem--the thinking woman's beauty bible!A

I have already read through this amazing book so many times that the top is feathered with little strips of paper marking all the pages I need to go back to (I couldn't quite bring myself to mark up such beautifully illustrated pages.) There are so many photographs and drawings to help make the author's point that you can look expensive for a lot less than you think. But the book delivers even more than the title suggests. Andrea Lustig, according to the "About the Author" section, has been a beauty expert at Glamour magazine long enough to have figured out what is worth spending money on and, more importantly, what isn't! So this is really a beauty bible for the rest of us. It's like having a really shrewd girlfriend decide to dish all her secrets. I'm sure it will save me money in the long run, but I must say I feel inspired to run out and buy a few of the products she mentions, especially those in the "Save" (rather than "Splurge") column. The idea of dividing up each section into four different variations of "expensive" style: "Park Avenue Pretty," "Hollywood Boho," Glam Globe-Trotter," and "Modern Movie Star" (hey, we can all dream) makes the book extra fun, but the advice on getting your money's worth in hair cuts and color, skin care, makeup, grooming, and fashion is completely down to earth. I already don't know how I did without this book and will be buying copies for my teenage niece and my mom!

    excellent

This is a very easy read loaded with practical information for someone who wants a classic look. Great tips, and wonderful resources from very inexpensive products to top of the line. Lent it to a friend and she wouldn't give it back so I ordered another.

    Truly helpful

I was skeptical when I first saw this book online; I figured it would be another one of those "books" (to use the term loosely) that features very little text with lots of white space around it and some glossy photos of celebrities -- in other words, it would offer precious little information, nearly all of which would already by known to anyone who has flipped through a few fashion & beauty magazines over the years. I am happy to report I was wrong! How to Look Expensive is full of useful information that will really help you look better AND save money. There are loads of beauty books out there, but this is one of the few that really delivers.

I had the pleasure of meeting the author in person recently, and she is as down to earth and helpful as the tips in her book. Buy the book and take it with you when you shop (we went to Target, where she pointed out some of her favorites!) - you will be glad you did - it's a great reference guide for all ages!
