Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Beginning readers can learn how to undertake a simple science experiment in this book in the "Hands-On Science Fun" series from Capstone Press. Each page has just two or three sentences written in a large plain font surrounded by lots of white space. Color photographs help beginning readers understand the accompanying text. The science experiment—dissolving the shell of an egg in vinegar—is both interesting and simple enough for a young student to do with minimal adult assistance. Only a few materials are needed, and these are listed and illustrated with a small color photograph. The book gives instructions for performing the experiment, and then explains how it works. A short glossary defines more difficult words, and a short bibliography lists a few books that offer more science experiments. Instead of listing websites, the bibliography sends students to Capstone's website for links to Internet sites and other activities, projects, and games. This is a great book for teachers and parents looking for ways to marry science projects and activities with new readers. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
