This book came highly recommended from a respected acting coach so I decided to pick it up. The verdict? I think it will likely become one of the most important acting books of my generation. Anyone in the business knows that Michael Shurtleff's "Audition" is one of the very best. Deryn Warren, one of Shurtleff's former students, expands on Shurtleff's core teachings to deliver an incredibly thorough and practical guide to the craft of acting. For me, the driving force behind Warren's work is her focus on script analysis. What are you fighting for? What is the subtext? Where are the events and discoveries? She also offers practical tips on how to make active choices when it comes to lists, what acting traps to avoid, and what perfect technique looks like in the auditioning room. Her chapters on Comedy and Script Analysis are truly exceptional and should be included in every actor's toolbox. There is so much more praise that I could heap on Warren's book but I implore you to find out for yourself. If you're a beginning actor then consider yourself lucky to have found this book so early in your career. Stick to Warren and Shurtleff's approach and you're in good hands. If you've been acting for a while then this book will surely refresh your passion for the craft.

Every actor should have this book, especially before a big audition. The author breaks down audition technique into clear, clever and easy to understand steps, with illuminating examples, insightful script analyses, and lots of humor. Just reading this makes me feel like a better actor and opens me up creatively. I can't wait for my next audition!

The advice Deryn gives in the book is not just for the stage but for outside the stage too. And it works too. The title alone is something we all strive for. I mean, if you substitute audience for another noun like girl friend, boy friend, colleague, boss, new acquaintance, etc. don’t we all want to be liked. Absolutely! One can find a lot of books to help you succeed whether it is in business or in a relationship. And some are very popular and do have their advocates. But Deryn breaks it down to simpler terms. First, she tells you to be yourself. And she says that because each of us is unique and has our own special experiences that make us who we are. But one thing we all need to do if we are to succeed, whether it acting a role on stage, or selling a product or service to somebody, or trying to attract the opposite sex to name a few, is that we have to sell our self to that person or the audience. In a way, in our everyday life, we are all on stage, trying to sell ourselves. Some other topics include the use of humor, taking risks, and the use of “beats” as Deryn refers to it. We all love to laugh and when you can share a laugh with somebody, it is a good ice-breaker. Taking risks and succeeding more or less makes you more accomplished. And understanding “beats” is what Deryn means is the silences or pauses. It allows your audience to a wait what would be forthcoming from you. It could also mean to stay silent and listen. In summation, the advice is sound and practical. And wouldn’t it be nice if we had a director like Deryn, to guide us to a memorable performance.

Deryn ~ My name is JOCK WASHINGTON. I not only have had the amazing pleasure and honor of coming across your book: "How To Make Your Audience Fall In Love With You" but I've also purchased the book and began to read and digest it myself. I am overwhelmed in the best of ways and I simply can't put this book down. I'm a 49 year old, African American Actor with HUGE DREAMS and I want to be the type of Actor that you speak of in your book: "A better Actor than I dreamed was possible." I want to be the type of Actor that illuminates the human spirit with my performances. I have HUGE DREAMS of one day being an "Academy Award" winning Actor. While I realize that this business is not about awards and such, I know that by reaching for the stars, striving to be the best that I can be, that at the very least, maybe, just maybe one day I'll end up on top of the world because of your courage to share the information in this book. THANK YOU!!
