Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Darrell A Owens, DNP, ARNP(University of Washington School of Nursing)
Description: This is a comprehensive overview of pain issues unique to the elderly, assessment, and general management techniques.
Purpose: The book is designed to provide helpful and usable clinical information about pain the older patient. Topics include medication, pain assessment, and certain difficult to treat pain conditions. Pain, both acute and chronic, impacts a significant number of elders. As the population continues to age, clinicians will need increased knowledge of how to assess and treat pain in the elderly. The importance of this book and those like it cannot be understated.
Audience: The primary audience is clinicians involved in the care of the elderly, specifically generalist nurses. The book is written at a basic level and is appropriate for nurses working at the bedside. While not introducing new information, it should be considered as a review for advanced practice nurses working with the elderly.
Features: This is an excellent review of the scope of the problem of pain, including how it impacts elders, clinicians, and the healthcare system. The sections on pain assessment, acute pain, and chronic pain are well written and cover the topics thoroughly. It is written in an easy-to-read style, with margins and spacing that allow readers to flow from page to page without difficulty. The book is written at an introductory level, and thus does not introduce new content for experienced practitioners, nor does it cover specific prescribing recommendations for medical management.
Assessment: The book does a nice job of introducing readers to the topic of pain management in the elderly. It is brief, well written, and easy to read.
