    Anyone Can Do It

    Yes, this book was written by a female for a mostly male dominated business venture. Boys, step aside because Tanya Davis, author of How To Operate A Financially Successful Construction Company, can sure teach you a few things in respect to running your construction company. Davis provides an easy to follow book that looks at getting in the mindset to begin a business, what is needed when starting your own company, how to find the right employees to create a support staff, bidding, contracts and more. Everything you¿ve ever wanted to know about starting your own construction company is held inside the book¿s pages. The secrets are unlocks as each page turns. Despite the fact that Davis outlines many things in the book that a reader may not know, there are several things that the reader would view as just being common sense. An example of this is when Davis explains how an entrepreneur will be faced with new challenges. We all know that¿s a given. The self-assessment questionnaire located about a quarter into the book was a great. The reader could easily see if their personality type would be successful in running that sort of company. A questionnaire should not always be the key factor in seeing what life path to enter, but it can sometimes lead you in the right place and make you realize what exactly is involved and necessary in the given field. There was a balance within the book as well. The book provided tips, tricks and certain things all business owners must know and be fairly decent at however, it also provided a section that described why contractors fail. This section highlighted what a person needs to know before they get into this immense investment and capital venture. Many things could happen in the construction business as well that one must be aware of and didn¿t realize before reading the book. The bidding chapter was extremely useful. As a contractor you do not want to go too high or too low. Finding a middle ground could be a lengthy and difficult process. Davis highlighted the important issues like what you shouldn¿t do questions to ask yourself and the difference in an estimate as opposed to a bid, among other things. Davis provided a list of definitions of various insurance policies. She lent great insight and provided the common person with an illustrated background involving an illustrious idea like insurance. Government regulations that were also given added a great repertoire. This book may be written by a woman, but it is written by a woman who definitely researched the industry and knows what she is talking about. I definitely recommend this book to those who are looking for the right read to think about or even start there business off on the perfect foot.

    Great book

    If you are looking to own your own construction business this is the perfect start up guide for you. In this book you will be guided through step by step how to determine if you will make a good business owner, where to begin on looking for information, and how to get started on your new business. This is a great all inclusive guide to building your own construction company from the ground floor up.

    A Must Have!

    How to Open & Operate a Financially Stable Construction Company: This book is a must have for anyone even considering going into the construction business! Tanya Davis delves into every aspect of the business from knowing yourself and whether or not you are cut out for it, to hiring, bidding, and financial statements. The book is also filled with great tips, websites to reference and tons of sample surveys and forms. Even those currently in the business of construction can benefit from this book¿s insights and advice on how to be financially stable. I rate this book a 5 out of 5.

    Provides common sense advice & valuable resources

    In the realm of 'how-to' books, this stands out as one that drills into the reader the basic common sense necessities of starting almost any business and combines them with some valuable specifics about the particular challenges of being a building contractor. The construction industry is risky business and not for the faint of heart, so one of the earliest sections of the book is a questionnaire to determine if the reader 'has what it takes' to make it in this business. If you fail that, you might as well not read any further. Overly well-organized (the table of contents alone is 15 pages!), this is definitely a useful primer for anyone who is toying with the idea of this career option. There are a number of especially useful tables in the book, like budget templates and project timelines, and the tone of the book is decidedly upbeat about the factors that make for success in this--and, frankly, almost any--business.

    An excellent resource for the construction industry

    If there is any industry that could motivate a person to want to be in his or her own business it¿s the construction industry. My husband has worked construction for 25+ years and every job he gets it is a common frustration to have to tolerate negative impact of slacking project managers or even subcontractors. When you are the hired employee you don¿t necessarily have much choice in which you work with. As the owner it is entirely up to you. You know the industry in and out and you know it is profitable. You have finally decided to start your own construction business so that you can be in control and truly excel at what you do best. First thing you need to do is learn a little about what you are getting into. You understand construction and permits, but do you understand accounting and marketing? This book covers topics in these areas and more. With chapters devoted to each aspect of a construction business individually you get a greater understanding of what¿s ahead. The book includes many samples of the forms and contracts it discusses to help ensure a thorough understanding. It is even packed with resources to help you get started and maintain your business with direct contact information. It is written in a simple to understand layout with detailed explanations for things that may be unfamiliar. Although this book is geared towards owning and operating a successful construction business I would recommend it to anyone working in the industry. It has everything you need packed into one book, right at your fingertips. My overall rating is 5 stars.

    Great for new entrepreneurs

    This is an excellent book if you¿re thinking of starting your own construction company, especially if you don¿t have any entrepreneurial experience. Davis introduces you to almost everything you will have to consider for both starting and running your own business. But this is definitely a book for someone with little or no experience since Davis is more interested in making sure you¿re aware of what you will face instead of going into a lot of detail about each step. That¿s a good thing, though, since the book is designed for someone who is still in the planning stages. Unlike many other new business books which try to tackle too many different types of industries at once, Davis is definitely focused on construction and helps particularly with the kind of personnel and bidding issues that will arise in finding and carrying out contracts. Perhaps the most useful part of the book, though, is where she details how to put together a viable contract, including a nice discussion of how to minimize your own legal risks. Some of the later sections about capital and marketing seemed a bit general ¿ they¿re certainly useful if you haven¿t run your own business before, but they could be more specific to the construction industry. The book is still an indispensable resource for new entrepreneurs, and you will find everything here entirely useful, from the beginning steps to the appendices that point you to a huge range of resources that you may 'and will!' need as your business grows.

    How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Construction Company is a very detailed but simple to read book helpful to anyone building a construction business. The Table of Contents clearly lays out subjects and tasks for anything you might be looking for. The most valuable part of this book was its focus on market trends and how to manage your business in poor economic climates. Creating repeat business as an alternative to always working on new clients is something most people don¿t consider. The multiple forms included in the book such as the self assessments, prequalification forms and various checklists are easy to understand and could be re-used depending on the project you are working on. Everything from choosing a business name to building codes to consider, to payroll processes are discussed which is different from many books which usually either focus just on the business aspect or just on the building aspect, not on how one impacts the other. The book is set up to help any builder cut waste out of their business and ultimately improve profits. The financial details are always hard to sort through but the book broke them down into useable information. 4 out of 5 stars.

    ¿How to Open and Operate A Financially Successful Construction Company¿ by Tanya R.Davis is a fantastic resource for anyone in this business or who is contemplating starting one. Ms. Davis starts by helping the reader understand leadership and confidence when owning a company and includes a self assessment questionnaire at the end of the chapter to help the reader understand their strengths and weakness as a leader. She then continues to explain in great detail the different ways businesses can be structured¿for example, Sole proprietorship, general partnership, limited partnership, and LLCs¿and the advantages and disadvantages that go along with each one. Ms. Davis further includes a breakdown of the company¿s structure and what each position is responsible for. She explains permits, bonding, hiring practices, checking references and payroll. Also included in this very informative book is a section on safety issues, governmental regulations, contracts, environmental concerns and how to schedule and budget for a project. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is in the construction business already as well as someone who is considering starting his/her own business. ¿How to Open and Operate A Financially Successful Company¿ also contains valuable links for further information. This book should be considered an excellent resource and a definite business asset.

    Stop Searching!!!

    Spending hours searching for a form or a contract online is not a new thing to someone running a construction business. Looking all over for laws and ordinances that pertain to different parts of running a business takes up so much time. Do you love to build, but get bogged down with the business side of the things? This book is a great time saver and has so many great tools to eliminate some of this frustration. How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Construction Company contains tons of resources to help with those issues. It is filled with detailed explanations of legal documents and laws that new businesses come into contact with. One of the best parts of the book for me was the printable forms that I could use after I finished the book. How to Open and Operate a Financially Successful Construction Company, is a practical step by step guide, tells you everything you need to know when getting started. The book is filled with personal accounts from construction company owners as they began their new business. It is definitely worth the time and money. I am so glad that I sat down and gave it a shot. Written by people that have already become successful, it has practical advice to help make the job more profitable. It is easy to read and understand. The book lays everything out step by step from hiring & firing, to bidding on a job and includes all of the forms and documents necessary to do it all. It has taken the business side of construction and made it manageable. Truly an enjoyable book!
