This is a great book if you already have a little back ground in drawing and oil painting and want to advance your skill. The book teaches you what colors, painting mediums, and brush sizes to use. The author also shows you step step when to add tone and highlights while painting. The step by step color photos of the process are very helpful. He also gives recipes for making your own painting mediums as well as classical recipes. However, some of the information is outdated, as the book was written in the late seventie's. For example: 'while cooking your medium he recomends using an asbestos pad for even heatintg'. Surprisingly enough, some of the commercial products he recomends are still readily available. All and all a great book for people who want to learn classical figure or portrait painting. The paintings inside are quite nice as well.
It's never encouraging to read a book about painting only to see that the author does not paint very well himself. Would not have purchased this but it was recommended reading for a class. The information is also out of date. I bought another book at the same time, covering the same material which was much more helpful [Traditional Oil Painting by Virgil Elliot].
