Overview

North America's foremost experts on natural medicine and diabetes create the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide to defeating one of our fastest-growing health problems.

Diabetes remains among the most prevalent health issues, bringing with it an increased risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. Now an expert in natural medicine and an authority on diabetes combine their knowledge to address diabetes prevention: coping with the disease if you have been diagnosed, and even reversing its effects. The authors provide food and supplement plans that can help you avoid developing the illness, even if there is a family history. If you are currently being treated for diabetes, this program is designed to help reduce or eliminate your need for medication.

This invaluable resource contains risk-assessment tests that track your progress, meal plans, shopping lists, and adjustable nutritional and supplement regimes based on your level of risk or severity of the disease. It is one of the first natural programs to be developed in conjunction with conventional medicine.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Naturopath Murray (The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine) and Lyon (director, North American Diabetes Prevention and Reversal Initiative) argue that lifestyle and environmental factors are causing the explosion of diabetes in the American population and that, by following his program, readers can reduce the risk of developing the disease or even reverse its progress. Presented are their arguments for diabetes as the epidemic of the 21st century, as well as risk factors and prevention via nutrition, dietary supplements, and exercise. They also maintain that the best diet in the management of diabetes is their own rather than that of the American Diabetes Association. Diabetes monitoring and mainstream therapies are briefly covered, as are complications. Appendixes include specific recommendations for supplements and dosages, a daily eating plan with recipes, a hypoglycemia questionnaire, and a glycemic index. The complex explanations are at a sophisticated reading level, and evidence-based information is interspersed with highly suspect medical studies. No attention is given to working with one's physician, even when larger doses of niacin are suggested. While the authors include some valuable material, too much of it is misleading and not founded on solid research; patients who follow the advice on supplements here without consulting their doctors may find themselves in serious health trouble. Diana Guthrie's Alternative and Complementary Diabetes Care is a far superior choice. Not recommended.-Janet M. Schneider, James A.
