Overview

How do you get your story idea looked at, let alone accepted? Should the article be written first, or only after getting an editor's go-ahead? Where do you start? Freelance article writer Shirley Kawa-Jump has written a book designed to answer all the novice writer's common questions about getting articles published by magazines, journals, and newspapers. While some writers write for pleasure, others may want to start a career. And for some, frequent publication is simply a requirement of their chosen profession.

Part One examines each of these possibilities, and then goes on to explore the available writers' markets and explain how they work. Part Two provides a complete system of article submission geared to maximize the writer's odds of getting an acceptance, while avoiding those errors that can turn off an editor. Part Three reviews the nuts and bolts of the profession--from idea development to contract negotiation. If you think you have the ability to write, or you simply have the need to get published, How to Publish Your Articles will provide you with all the information you need to make it happen.

Shirley Kawa-Jump received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Massachusetts, graduating with honors. She wrote her first published article at age eleven, and was hired as a freelance reporter for a weekly newspaper at the age of twelve. Since then, she has gone on to pursue a highly successful career as a freelance writer. During her twenty-plus-year career, Ms. Jump has had over 2,500 articles published, with many of her stories appearing in nationally recognized magazines and newspapers. In addition to being the author of two published books, she is a highly sought after speaker.

Writing mentor and publications sage for sale--under 20 bucks!

The usual problem with a book about writing is that writers tend to be stingy with their ideas. Freelance writing is a desperate enterprise, and few people want to give up actual trade 'secrets'--today's reader is tomorrow's competition! I have read dozens of books that gave me tiny scraps of information, little hints, but no actual help in making the sale--and if you can't sell, you may as well pop those manuscripts in the furnace and get some use out of them. Ms. Kawa-Jump's book holds nothing back, she is a writer's guru of the highest order. Her book is full of practical advice and suggestions, and her friendly style makes you feel you have a mentor right there cheering for you. You can find the real nitty gritty in here, the meat about what it takes to be a successful freelancer and how to tweak your submissions to fit your dream publications. If you want to be a writer, fantastic. Work hard, write hard--but before you send out that query, BUY THIS BOOK.

Finally, a comprehensive guide for writers!

If, when I was making my first attempts at selling my writing, someone had handed me a copy of How to Publish Your Articles, I¿m sure I would have seen clouds part and heard heavenly hosts singing as the secrets of successful freelance writing were imparted to me. When I look back at those first submissions I made, I cringe at how amateurish they were. I followed the bits of advice I found in many different publications, but it has taken years for me to get it all together, and my success is still very limited. This book stands out as one that stands alone. Within each chapter, important concepts are paraphrased in margin notes for quick reference. The tone of the book is that of a mentor. While there are many useful guides available on both the creative and business aspects of writing, none take a writer so carefully and so clearly through each step of the writing and publishing process. Having read this book, I am approaching my writing career with a renewed confidence in my ability to find homes for my ideas and present them like a professional.

By far, the BEST book on writing and publishing I've seen!

I recently received my copy, and although I have purchased many books about freelance writing and publishing over the last three years, this one is, BY FAR, the best one I've seen. The chapter on understanding an article market and how it works has information I've never seen covered in any other source. And the chapter about developing ideas for new articles has helped me work out several new ideas for proposals. There's also a great chapter about interviewing, and even a section about academic publishing. The best thing about this book is that it grows with you. It has valuable information for new writers just breaking in, as well as information about how to enhance an already-established (or semi-established) writing career. I give it my highest recommendation!
