Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
HOW TO RAISE A DINOSAUR by Natasha Wing is a delight. The illustrations by Pablo Bernasconi are bright and simple and just silly enough to enjoy… This will be good for lots of giggles when read aloud.”"

Some books are charming; others are flat-out fun. "How to Raise a Dinosaur," by Natasha Wing and illustrated by Pablo Bernasconi is hilarious!

When looking for a pet, you can consider "mice and horses and cats and dogs," but the author encourages you to seriously consider getting a dinosaur. Of course, there are some important things to consider: like the size of your yard and whether you want a meat-eater or a plant-eater.

Wing writes a zany story. She suggests going to a dinosaur shop to find a good pet, but stresses the need for play toys and proper vet care. Bernasconi's illustrations brightly fill each page and feature flaps and cutouts of what's going on behind the scenes.
Her closing advice: "Above all, give your dinosaur lots of love . . . or it will . . . EAT YOU!"

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Can raising a dinosaur be similar to raising a pet? Readers will find out in this hilarious parable meets cautionary tale that reads like a guide to puppy care. A boy immediately engages readers by asking, "Are you thinking of getting a pet? Then you've come to the right place." He lists the obvious options: dogs, cats, horses, mice, etc., including his selection—a dinosaur. Children learn there is much to consider when choosing a pet—size, expenses, food preferences, walking, playing, training, and vet visits. Cartoonlike illustrations are playful and explode with bright colors. Bernasconi masterfully creates each image as a collage, using found objects and incorporating textures and shapes that are digitally enhanced. Many pages include lift-up flaps, and some corners have cut-outs of dinosaurlike teeth, accentuating the fun. The simple text, with one sentence per page, is in perfect sync with illustrations. "Don't forget to pick up the poop" shows the narrator using a scoop truck for this dino-size task. "Always let your dinosaur know who's boss" features the narrator scolding his pet, while his dino listens sheepishly. Youngsters will enjoy multiple readings while poring over the visual details. The narrator wraps up his advice with "Above all, give your dinosaur lots of love...." And with a turn to the last page, readers will discover the side-splitting answer to what happens if they don't. This title will be an enormous hit at storytime.—Anne Beier, Clifton Public Library, NJ

My Review: Are you considering getting a pet? Then you need this book for the guidelines on how to take care of a pet. Narrated by a little boy who goes on to explain that apart from dogs, cats, birds and horses, dinosaurs make great pets. But before you get one you need to know some important things. First you have to make sure you have enough space because of its size. There are large and small dinosaurs at the shop. There are plant eaters or meat eaters. Just make sure the one you chose is healthy and friendly. There’s quite a responsibility required in taking care of a pet that is a dinosaur…LOL! This book comes with a die-cut jacket, dino-bites, sturdy cardstock pages, and lift-the-flaps on some page. If your children are dinosaur lovers then they will love this book. The illustrations by Pablo Bernasconi help make the book fun for all dinosaur and pet lovers! 5 Stars ***** Ages: 4 and up Pages: 24 FTC Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion in any way.
