    A reviewer

I work for a large consulting company and participate in a lot of computer application building. The writing that many of us do is only connected to a software development lifecycle. Their are meeting agendas and plans that add to the variety of documents, but when asked why we are writing these various documents, as an answer we hear ' it is a deliverable.' The understanding of the audience and what they are looking for doesn't always get mentioned. I don't imply that we don't have good writers at this company, but the process of writing improvement is based on practice over time. I took an effective business writing course, and it wasn't. The instructor I had wouldn't even use part of the course materials. I always thought we should have a course that teaches our people a process for focusing on their key points and structuring their writing while understanding their audience, and providing a payoff to their reader. Proposal writing is a specialized application of writing skill that allows less freedom in structure, but a process for transmitting the full power to the reader can still be followed in a proposal response. That's what this book is all about. It starts by decomposing the process for transmitting 'Information' in a funny way that teaches a 'non-writer' how to become a writer by following the steps to structure and organize our thinking and data before we start to write. After having planned out the writing and following the steps I am able to convey my message and more importantly have it understood. All this and it's funny too! A MUST read.
