Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for GHOST BUDDY #1: ZERO TO HERO:

"This title is chock-full of nuggets that will have the boys cheering…What’s more, parents and educators will cheer when Billy stands up to Rod without resorting to bully tactics."
--School Library Journal

"Readers will root for Billy to conquer his klutziness as well as the bully; his final feel-good triumph is satisfying."
--Publishers Weekly

"The story will amuse young readers, reluctant readers, and high-interest, low reading ability older readers, particularly boys.
--Library Media Connection

Children's Literature - Magi Evans
Sixth-grader Billy Broccoli's best friend is a ghost named Hoover Porterhouse III, who has been dead for ninety-nine years. He has one year left to prove to the ghostly higher-ups that he can be helpful and responsible, or he will never be able to leave the suburban area he is haunting and realize his dream of visiting every baseball stadium in America. He is improving in helpfulness, as he continues to give Billy advice on handling social situations, making him appear less of a dweeb. He also helps Billy in his dealings with Rod Brownstone, the verbally abusive bully who lives next door. In this third installment of the "Ghost Buddy" series, Billy decides that a pet will help Hoover be more responsible. He brings home a gecko and a fish, but both are failures. Finally, after hearing Hoover reminisce about a goat he once loved, Billy rents a goat for the weekend, telling his parents, who of course know nothing about Hoover, that it will be a green way to mow the lawn. All goes well until some young children visiting the Brownstones get involved, and the hilarious chaos that ensues sends the goat back to its owner. Still, both Billy and Hoover get kudos for their efforts, and it looks like Hoover may eventually get to leave the ranch (a few books in the future, no doubt). As in the first two books, both Billy and Hoover learn subtle lessons in how to treat others. Like the authors' "Hank Zipzer" series, these stories are excellent for reluctant readers, as well as for any youngster looking for a fun read. Reviewer: Magi Evans
