More for the Serious Jewelry Artists

This book is a great resource with loads of technical and practical information. Unfortunately it convinced me that this was not the business for me. I would not recommend it for the true hobbyist (folks like me). If you have been making jewelry just for fun; this book really shows the advanced skills needed, and tells about the time commitment required to turn a true profit. It probably saved me time and money by NOT proceeding on to the professional level. However, for the experienced jeweler, there is much content on making real money selling custom pieces. I would recommend it even for those who have new businesses and desire to branch out. It is extremely thorough and well researched.

    Amazing Book!!!

I LOVE this book! I'm starting my own jewelry business and this book has helped me SO much! The author is very knowledgeable in her field and discusses almost every aspect you can think of when starting your own home business. She is straight foward and gives you the REAL information you NEED, it's not all sugar coated like most authors tend to do. This book gets an A+++ and it made me want to pursue my business more!

    I Also Recommend:

    Not For Everyone

I rated this book with only four stars because even though the book is full of great information, resources, and is very detailed I found the author a bit harsh. This is not the only book I have read on getting started in the jewelry making business. The other book was very good and resourceful but the author kept it upbeat and positive. It encouraged me to start something new and made me feel without a doubt it can be done. However the author Maire Loughran of this book can easily discourage someone of doing something they have a passion for. If someone is already hesitant or is lacking confidence this is not the book for them. This book could be a dream killer. Bottom line is, this book was hard for me to read when it came to just getting what I needed without feeling that someone was already telling me that if I did not meet A, B, & C requirements there was no way of me being a success. In other words it could be telling someone, don't bother because you will probably fail. Don't look for encouragment and don't take this authors comments personally. She is a firecracker when it comes to business, she knows her stuff and the book is a great resource but in the end you have to be the one to decide if you have a passion for making jewelry. You never know, maybe you are a hobbyist but without even trying you may end up making a business after all.

How to Start a Home Based Business by Maire Loughran

It is a comprehensive book with a lot of ideas I never considered. I'm an accountant, so the financial portion was no surprise, but she had many ideas for promotion and manufacturing which were useful.
