God has chosen to convey an extremely important message to the human family, one that is a matter of life and death. In the Bible of 66 smaller books, we find God's will and purpose for us and what role we need to play in order to receive the gift of life.

If we are to know God, it only stands to reason; we must know his Word-The Bible. Jesus Christ makes this all too clear for us when he said in prayer to his Father: "This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent-Jesus Christ." (John 17:3, HCSB) So, here we see that "eternal life" is closely related to our knowing (having a relationship with) God and his Son, Jesus Christ. It is the apostle John who answers the why: "And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God's will remain forever."-1 John 2:17, ESV.

    Updated and Expanded

    This is an updated and expanded edition. We have done the following:

    * Replaced the 1881 RV with the 2001 ESV
    * Made correction to the spelling and grammar
    * We added a 128 page appendix, with improved arguments
    * We have added a modern-day bibliography
    * We added many * asterisk footnotes with updated information
    * We have added brackets [ ], with clarifying information

    This is a derivative work, which has been transformed and adapted. (i.e., updated and expanded) The purchaser of Torrey alone, would have only received 50 pages of somewhat outdated material. A purchaser of Torrey and Andrews combined, will receive 181 pages of current scholarship.

    Normally, I would not write a review on a book that I had something to do with, but I want potential readers to understand what we mean by updated and expanded. There are notes all throughout the book that have been added, which if put together, they would likely equal 10 pages of updates or explanations.

    Also, we updated many of the scriptural references from Torrey's 1881 Revised Version to the 2001 English Standard Version. There are places where we left the Revised Version because it was needed for the point he was making.

    In addition, we added actually more than the 128 pages in three appendices, it ended up being 181 pages. The appendix are called

    Bible Difficulties Explained, The Synoptic Problem, Debunking the Documentary Hypothesis and are quite beneficial to any Christian looking to defend his faith and God's Word.

    Finally, we added bracketed notes [ ], as well. These contain clarifying information. We also updated some of the English, and the grammar. Also, we replaced some of Torrey's highly technical words, replacing them with words that mean the same thing, but are much easier to understand. At the end, we recommended books along the lines of this one, on a much larger scale though. Torrey, and myself, are not seeking to pen a book on hermeneutics, but to offer some important reasons for deeper study, as well as numerous timeless principles for interpretation.
