    communication tools

    I'd buy anything by these authors. They're clear, practical and have gotten many years of feedback to fine tune their methods. I've recently found another tool for communicating lessons/advice that teens don't usually want to sit still for-- Words to Live By: A Journal of Wisdom for Someone You Love (Emily and Kate Marshall). It's a fill-in journal for you to write your thoughts on a whole range of life topics (love, friendship, money, health, spirituality...). Write in it, give it to them, let them read it on their own. I bet they start asking you questions. Mine did.

    GREAT BOOK - Simple and Practical

    This book is simple, practical and easy to implement. I read it in a 2 hour plane ride and was able to effectively use the information that night when I got home. Results - a 2 hour discussion with my son where we laughed and actually enjoyed each others company. I wold recommend this to anyone! Right up there with 1,2,3 Magic for ease of implementation.

    Great helping hand with Teen Agers

    Although each child is different, this book gives great tools in listening and communicating with Teen Agers. I highly recommend it for any parent, regardless if your Teen Ager is difficult or not.

    They Have Done It Again!

    As my children and step children have entered into, and some out of, teen years, this book has been invaluable to me. I think I'm so smart too much of the time! I know my intentions are to be helpful, but I'm not as smart and helpful as I'd like to think, talk too much and don't listen enough, and I needed to know that. This book, like their, "How to Talk so Kids Will Listen..." is filled with some of the most helpful and easy to follow parenting advice I've ever recieved.

    Very dry read

    The presentation of this book focuses on the process of gathering information from parents and teens. As I read the book, I kept hoping for some general guidelines or reminders to refer to as a parent, but the suggestions are very black and white. The examples are scattered throughout the book, and based on situations discussed in group meetings between the authors and parents or the authors and teens. The parent - teen relationship needs to grow during this critical time, and I felt this book was more about controlling your teen respectfully in difficult situations, rather than redefining the relationship as your teen becomes more independent.

    Great book because the cartoons/scenarios actually show you how to have different kinds of conversations than the usual back-and-forth, negative stuff that goes on between parents and kids. The book shows you the path to becoming an "askable" (as opposed to a clueless)adult.
