Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
How do you talk to a girl? There are grown men who still do not know the answer to this question, but the nine-year-old author of this book is ready to tell you. Some of his advice is right on, such as "To get a girl to like you, talk to her and get to know her." Some advice should be true, but often is not, such as "Girls always like smart boys." Some advice is just plain cute, such as "Your mom likes you to be clean and she is a girl." If you are an elementary school boy, this book's advice might help you catch a girl, but the author cautions readers to aim only for getting her to like you. Love, he says, should come later…like in middle school. For other readers, this book is just plain cute. The author knows more than his years would lead you to suspect. As an advice book for older kids, it probably will not work, but for younger kids (or older ones who want a smile) it is a sweet gift. One piece of advice that would work for all ages? "Whatever happens, don't let it make you crazy." Reviewer: Heather Robertson Mason

How to Talk to Girls

Chapter One

The Facts of Life

Sometimes, you get a girl to like you, then she ditches you.

Life is hard, move on!

Tip: About 73 percent of regular girls ditch boys; 98 percent of pretty girls ditch boys.

Or sometimes it just doesn't work out.

I had a crush on a girl in preschool.

Then my family had to move, so I had to let her wash out of my mind.

You also have to be aware that girls win most of the arguments and have most of the power. If you know that now, things might be easier.

Finally, if you try for too many girls, you will have jealousy issues and might end up with nobody. It is really best to go for just one.

If you do get a girl to like you, that is victory.

Winning victory is a dream for most boys, but it is very rare.

What does it take to win victory?

Read on and find out!

    Children and Writing

    Dear All,

Once word was out about this little boy and his "amazingly insightful" book into an 8 year olds' mind, I was perturbed on many different levels. After watching a few interviews with him and taking a jaunt down to the local bookstore to read what this child had to say, I had to wonder just how much his teachers and his mother put into this book themselves. Sure, there are childlike phrases throughout the book, but they seemed plotted to me. I don't believe this child wrote this entirely by himself, I don't feel it's cute and adorable just because he's 8 or 9, and I feel it's giving fame to someone who didn't do a heck of a lot to deserve it. This little boy will forever have money and fame because of something his teachers and parents helped him write, without ever having known what the true value of a hard earned dollar is. This might be cute to some people, but I feel it's rather offensive to other writers out there.
He's giving the wrong idea to children right now. How many 8 year olds do you know who come home after school completely focused on winning a girl's attention instead of playing with his friends? I believe girls still have "cooties" when they're 8. This book is pure nonsense and should have never entered the publishing world. I should applaud his mother and the other side kicks who put effort into this book, got it published, and gave him fame. Good job doing the work for him and fooling everyone out there!

    Dear all,

Please advise educators to recommend this good book, instead

what he said is very true.

Most kids are honest at his age, if they need to let you know something they will. I have 4 children, one boy 17, and three girls 14,10 and 9 and when this little boy was on this morning my son the 17 year old was home. And the boy said if they break up with you get over it, well my son has had only had two girlfriends and both of them broke up with him and it took him a long time to get over it.then the boy said to have hair combed and no sweat pants well my son was sitting on the couch, just out of the shower, hair not combed and sweat paints on.We all started to laugh. I think this boy may be onto something that men aren't.

    How to talk to girls

My wife bought this for our 15 month old son as a gag gift. She does read it to him now and then as a joke. Not sure how great the story of it is.

Insight on relationships viewed by a child

The Young man who wrote this book was on the Today Show and I thought he was absolutley adorable. For those who find this book to be dislikable or disturbing in any way, you need to get a sense of humor and not take things so seriously. We could all use some insight to what children see and think. It is more then obvious that they see more in the area of relationships then what we give them credit.

I have not read this book yet but I plan to buy it based on what I heard on the Today Show to shed a little humor in the office as a joke for a friend.

why is the world listening to a 8 year old

i don't think this book is true.1 reason is that the kid is 8 and has not grown up.think of how he doesn't have a girlfriend. i don't see why this book is published.it is offensive and bags on shy girls.my sister is shy.i wonder how many adults helped and didn't get credit.8 year olds like beyblades, pokemon, and yugioh.they haven't got a chance to grow out of it.it would be a good book if he was a teen or an adult who had experience.he has every thing wrong and should mature.i give i 2 for being cute

    Why not...

You see... Ive never read the book, well probably because I'm a girl, but why can't anyone write a book, " How to talk to boys" ? I've seen every other How-to book, but not how to talk to boys. Its just a suggestion. Thanks.

    Good Book

I bought it first of all because I wanted to support a young entrepreneur. Also, I work with kids and found this book to be a catalyst for kids to open up and talk about things that interest them.

Reviewed by Jennifer Wardrip aka "The Genius" for TeensReadToo.com

It's very rare for an eight-year-old boy to write a book. It's even rarer that the same boy, at nine, gets that book published by a major company. And it's even more rare that said book, HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS, is laugh-out-loud hilarious, instructional, and something that everyone, regardless of age, can use and relate to.

Some of my favorite things from the book:

About 73 percent of regular girls ditch boys; 98 percent of pretty girls ditch boys. (Don't we know it!)

Don't act desperate. Girls don't like desperate boys.

Most boys in elementary school can hold on to a girl for only 30 days.

When you see a pretty girl, don't let her tractor beam pull you in.

Go for a talkative girl if you are shy. Then you only have to say one sentence, and she will do the rest of the talking.

Don't brag or she will ditch you.

Don't scream if you can't get the girl even after you've tried everything. If it doesn't work out, just let it go.

Alec Greven is a smart boy, and if he puts to use all of his tips and tricks from HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS, he's destined to be an even smarter man!

    Hummm.....

This book is absolutely adorable. I agree with those of you who think the parents and teachers helped write it. I'm sure they did. The point, though, came from the child. I think it's an excellent gift for an elementary aged boy (or older). My 4th grade son has had several "girlfriends" this year and he keeps getting dumped because of things this young man illustrated. If we teach our children how to behave while they are still children, who knows what gentlemen we can raise.....

    another dissenting opinion

I'll admit that I haven't read this book in its entirety, but I have browsed it on occasion as I work in a bookstore. I also saw one of the author's interviews. This is nothing more than a gimmick capitalizing on the child's perceived "cuteness" and precociousness. I've worked with many kids his age over the past couple of years and I can't imagine any of them saying what this kid says; I also can't recall ever feeling this way during my time as a 8/9 year-old boy. This boy's parents and (presumably) teachers have used him as a mouthpiece for easy book sales. Let's hope the kid doesn't have to spend the next eight years in the public school system, because he'll never live this down.

    Good book for shy boys!

I bought this book for my 8 year old nephew and one for my 12 year old son. Both boys laughed when they got it, but read it cover to cover when no one was looking! Boys tend to act goofy when they don't know how to act. This book is so good because it tells them what to say, how to start a conversation, and not to act goofy. Things that parents want to tell them, but it is not cool if your mom or dad told you to do it! It is a quick and easy read that was written by a clever 9 year old boy.

    Cute book!

I bought this book as a kind of joke for my 17 year old son for his stocking at Christmas! He loved the book - thinks it's hilarious and says he wishes he had been half as smart as the author at nine years old!

    Excuse me?

First:normally 8-9 year olds don't have dances(as in the interview)
Second:is he saying that shy girls are BAD to talk to in his interview?Seriously,I'm shy so basically he's insulting all shy people in this world.
Lastly:a quote: "Fine words!I wonder where you stole them."-Jonathon Swift.
I believe that some of these words are his but are we supposed to believe that all of them are?I mean come on most people his age say that girls are "icky" or have "cooties."
I haven't read the book yet and I don't intend to.Basically I'm rating the interview on the book's page
