Kirkus Reviews
Two of a king's pawns have to learn to trust each other in the first installment of a new fantasy romance series.Luciana has grown up on the Isle of Moon believing she was an orphan. She, like other children born when the two moons in the sky align, has special powers; on the island, these children are called the Embraced, but on the mainland they're considered an abomination by priests for the Light, who fear their powers. She is understandably surprised when a man comes to the island claiming to be her father and asking her to return to the mainland in place of her dead twin, who was supposed to marry the Beast of Benwick. Leo, her future husband, is also Embraced but doesn't have to fear those who would have him killed. He gains power from lightning—he kills anyone he touches with his bare hands. Leo and Luciana (posing as Tatiana) must marry or fear violent retaliation from the king. Of course, it doesn't really matter that they're being forced into a relationship, because they're instantly attracted to each other. If only they could actually touch and...other things. While it takes a while for the tone of the novel to match that of the more playful title, this is an entertaining first entry for Sparks' (Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Vampire, 2014, etc.) new series. But with all the intrigue, the spies, and the angst, most of the resolutions happen a little too easily; actions that severely betray characters' trust are brushed away with little more than a shrug. Many subplots are solved swiftly, and what should have been the book's great climax peters out with little excitement, fanfare, or even remark. Fun but anticlimactic.

Kerrelyn Sparks apparently has issues with reality. After writing sixteen books about vampires, she has now completely gone off the deep end and wound up on another planet. But how thrilling that she can share this magical new world with her readers! Although she is best known (so far) for the Love at Stake series, which has hit as high as number 5 on the New York Times list and 22 on the USA Today list, she hopes her readers will love The Embraced as much as they did her merry band of vamps and shifters. 4.5 Kerrelyn Sparks is known for her Love at Stake series about vampires with a somewhat comedic twist as well as historical romances. This book is a fantasy new series with another take on the Beauty and the Beast story. Luciana has grown up in a convent on an island as an orphan with others who are like her. She is known as one of the Embraced which means she has some magical powers. It’s a dangerous thing to be on the mainland where she was born which is why Luciana was hidden away years ago. When her father comes to take her home, Luciana risks all to help him avoid a nefarious plot. Through a series of subterfuges, she becomes engaged to Lord Leo, the “beast,” whom who everyone fears because he can kill with a touch since he can harness lighting and use it as a powerful weapon. I enjoyed this story of two people who are caught up in political intrigue; they truly come to love one another despite all the risks. Luciana is brave and selfless, but also resourceful and would do anything to protect those she loves. She has a fierce warrior spirit and does not expect Leo or anyone else to shelter or rescue her despite their best efforts. Leo makes a fine hero; with his deadly power, he has had very little physical connection with anyone which makes for a lonely life, but he acts with honor and compassion towards his people. He is Lord Protector for an evil king who reminds me of Herod by wanting to destroy anyone he perceives as a threat to the throne, even his own family. Since this is a new series, there is quite a bit of world building, but it does not interfere with the flow of the story. It’s a bit like Game of Thrones without all of the grim death and brutality as people actually get to be happy though they have been through some sad losses and difficult trials. Some Princess Bride style humor also lightens to the load so all is not drama. Five books are planned in the series and this one is off to a good start.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! And I’m picking up a paperback of it tomorrow! The cover is a work of art! This is the first book in a new series, and it is awesome! This is paranormal romance…my favorite! There are steamy scenes, so adults only. I can’t believe it, but this is my first review for Kerrelyn’s work. I own and have read most of the Love at Stake series, and I even got my mom addicted to her work too! But it was before I started writing reviews! I guess I will have to go back and read the series and write reviews because I love her books and her writing style. She is definitely one of my fav authors! This book had everything I love in a story! Adventure, conflict, drama, mystery, magic, and romance that ensured I couldn’t put the book down, I loved every moment! Luciana is an awesome leading lady and easy to love! She is strong and kind and will not back down for those she loves! There are some especially humorous moments with her sister, but I won’t spoil it for you! Leo is a great match, and I definitely fell in love with his protectiveness and how he is always will to stand up for everyone and fight for them regardless of who they are. This is a fantastic start to a series that I can’t wait to read more of! I highly recommend to any paranormal adventure loving reader who wants everything in their books like shifters, gifts, ghosts, fighting, murder, and more!

This is one tale as old as time that I wish wouldn't have ended. After winning a copy, but getting tired of waiting for it from the pub's snail mail, I bought it. And let me tell you, I was so engrossed in the story that I hated to put it down, unfortunately with it's length (Thank You, Ms. Sparks!) it had to be. I am surprised how much I actually fell in love with this against the odds love concept. It has such a different feel from her other series, but Ms. Sparks truly has done it again. The writing, the characters, the romance kept me spellbound that I am looking forward to taking a second trip to this otherworldly place.

How To Tame a Beast in Seven Days was a fantastic book. Set in a fantasy world, it pulled on my roots of high fantasy reading and made them proud. A world that is detailed and vibrant, with people to go right along with it. There are even dragons!!!! Combine that with a beautifully arranged marriage style romance, I think I found a truly winning series. The Embraced are a group of people born under a certain moon and grow up to be blessed/cursed with strange and sometimes terrifying powers. Luciana is an orphan growing up on the Isle of the Moon, the one place where Embraced are not feared and reviled. She was sent there to protect her from those that would kill her for what she is. She loves the island and her 'sisters,' but when her father (surprise!) shows up, she finds out that her history is completely different than what she believed. Returning with her father to the mainlands, Luciana will have to convince the world that she is another person as she prepares to marry the Beast of Benwick, a man rumored to kill all who come near. And so begins our romance. Of course, the Beast has a surprising history and personality. I'm wasn't sure how Kerrelyn Sparks was going to get these characters together for a while. Everything was stacked against them and both were terrified of what might happen. There are some crazy twists and turns as Luciana and the Beast travel to the capital. Attacks, deaths, discoveries, and along the way we get to meet some really great secondary characters that I feel just might show up with a story of their own - I certainly hope so. While I enjoy a good twisting tale, there were a few times that it seemed like a twist was thrown into drag the story out just a tad, and then we had a bit of a rushed ending. Overall, I loved the world, I loved the characters, and I can't wait to see what they are going to do next. **I voluntarily read a review copy of this book**

Brilliantly written full of intrigue, laughter, romance and vivid descriptions. This is the first book I have read from author Kerrelyn Sparks and I am not disappointed in this first book to the new The Embraced Series. It was enthralling on how she plotted this book with all the characters and plots going on in the background. The dramatic first chapter opening quickly move the reader into Luciana's life and how her life was to change. It was very fast paced and I just couldn't put the book down from that point on. Her sisters were another point of interest and it was obvious that their stories would be just as phenomenal as hers. What an interesting and unexpected character Lord Leofric, the Beast of Benwick turned out to be! His fully developed personality is larger than life and will enchant the reader as they learn more about him. The men in his army that are close to him create a tight family as well as a very strong defensive team for keeping those he cares for alive. Brody is the secondary character that caught my imagination as he was featured throughout the book. Even if he wasn't there is something about him that drew me too him. As one of the Embraced it is obvious that there is more to him than meets the eye and I can't wait to read his book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next book to this series for this reason I give it 5 STARS.

From the brilliant imagination of Kerrelyn Sparks comes a bold new fantasy romance series in which passion and magic collide. Behold the Embraced... How can she resist the man who scorches her soul and makes her feel intoxicated with desire—even if surrendering to him could destroy them both? Review: I can say with certainty that I have loved every Kerrelyn Sparks book that I have ever read and that absolutely includes this one! This is the first in a new series featuring people who are "Embraced" which are special powers. It starts with girls who have been sent to a nunnery as babies by their families to hide them from those who would not understand their powers. It looks as though each book will center around one of the girls and what happens when she finds out who she is and where she came from. In this first story we have Luciana, who can interact with the dead. This leads to some interesting, fun and dramatic scenes as she is interacting with them. Than we have "The Beast" or Leo who can harness lightening and can kill with a touch. It is basically love/lust at first sight for these two and all the things that these two go through to be together is a wild ride. I don't want to give away too many plot points or spoilers. So I will boil it down to this; we have good vs. evil, action, adventure, drama, court machinations and romance. The world building was done excellently and it was easy to understand, who and what was going on. Plus, Ms. Sparks always has a way with witty and fun dialogue that makes her stories all that much more enjoyable to read. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a romantic fantasy read. 4.5Stars *I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book provided by the publisher.*

Kerrelyn Sparks created a perfect blend of Fantasy/Adventure and Paranormal Romance. The world she creates is immersed with vivid characters and settings that leave you looking forward to the next visit with the sisters. I was thrilled that some of the trademark humor we've come to love from Kerrelyn Sparks is scattered throughout the story. Overall I was wonderfully entertained by this story.

This book was so much fun to read! This is the first book that I have read by Kerrelyn Sparks and I am now thinking that I have probably been missing out on a very good thing. This book caught my attention right away with the fun title and when I picked it up to take a closer look, I was immediately hooked. I actually read half the book without even realizing it because I simply couldn't put it down. This book focuses on Luciana and Lord Leofric, or the Beast. Luciana has lived her life on the Isle of Moon at a convent with her friends that she considers her sisters. She is shocked to meet her father but recovers quickly and agrees to go with him and marry the Beast. The Beast has led a life where he is feared by others because of his powers. He has rarely been touched by others since coming into his power because he is so dangerous. I really liked the characters in this book. Luciana and Leofric were both wonderful. Each of them had really interesting abilities that really added a layer to their characters. Luciana was such a caring person from the very beginning of the story when she gives up her life to protect the father she didn't even know she had. Leofric is thought to be heartless and tough. It quickly becomes apparent that he cares about others deeply but must distance himself out of fear of causing harm. He leads a rather lonely life until he meets Luciana. I liked Luciana and Leofric as a couple. They did fall for each other quite quickly but I wasn't bothered by that in this particular story. They had a nice banter with each other and Luciana did not fear the Beast as others did. They had a lot of chemistry from the very first time they saw each other and it only grew throughout the story. I had a lot of fun watching this pair get to know each other. I really enjoyed the world this book was set in. The special abilities of the characters were a lot of fun and added an interesting element to the story. I liked the almost medieval feel to the kingdom complete with evil king. The supporting characters in the story were very well done and I hope to see some of them featured in future books in this series. I would highly recommend this book to others. This was the kind of book that just swept me away into a fantastical world of romance. I can't wait to read more in this exciting series! I received an advance reader edition of this book from St. Martin's Press.

How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days by Kerrelyn Sparks is the start of a new series, The Embraced. The reader is given a new place and a new set of characters. What is still there is the fantastic and fun writing from an author who has a witty style that makes you believe that any fantasy is possible. Leo and Ana are wonderful together in this Beauty and Beast loosely based story. The plot has a fast pace for the relationship developing between Leo and Ana, if a somewhat slower one in some other areas. Part of this is because the needed world building that usually goes on in the first book of a series. This book has an old world feel to it that fits the story-line so well. I could see it all in my mind. Also I enjoyed how the characters are given multifaceted personalities and unique quirks. Kerrelyn Sparks’ How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days is sure to be a hit with paranormal/fantasy fans; those who have read a lot and those who are new to the genre. I can recommend this book to all. An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley.

How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days 'How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days' by Kerrelyn Sparks is book One in the "The Embraced" series. This is the story of Luciana and Leo. I must say this book hooked me in pretty fast and I could not put it down...I had to read it until I was done. What a great book to start what appears to be a great Series by Ms. Sparks!Luciana grew up on Isle of Moon along with a few other girls with special powers. They are all close and feel like sister but each one is starting to have their own adventure and to deal with their unknown past. Luciana father comes for her a man she never met or knew that he was alive. But her father needs her now to save him, his land and his people. Luciana finds that she is the key to a marriage that will save her father and all that he holds dear. But Luciana learns she must pretend to be her sister who is now dead. Can Luciana pretend to be her sister who other than looks... has no similar trait?Leo is known as the Beast because he is rumored to have killed his mother and nanny along with others. The King wants him to marry. But Leo knows there is a reason behind it, as the King is evil. Leo fears that he would hurt his future wife if he touches her but he finds her so attractive that he is having a hard time dealing with his fear. Luciana too finds Leo attractive and worries that her secrets will become an issue.Leo was a strong, hurt yet loving with an Alpha Male attitude toward Luciana. I loved watching these too come together. I so loved the secondary characters and hope to see their story next!!"My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily

Kerrelyn Sparks has given me another fabulous bite of entertainment. Been reading her Love at Stake series for years. How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days is set in a fantasy world called Aerthlan. This world is made up of five kingdoms. Four of these kingdoms worship the sun and one prays to the two moons. The day that these two moons align births are Embraced with Unique powers. Kings fearing these powers send assassins to kill the newborn infants. Loving parents exist and to spare their children from certain death send them stealthy to the Isle of Moon. Five sisters living on the Isle call themselves family and vow to always be together. Fate evolves around sister Luciana and the Beast Leo that no one can touch in this first of what will be a great new series. Paranormal fans will experience Beasts, Dragons, Heroes, Shifters, Elves and sisters with powers. A copy of this book was provided to me by St. Martin's Press through Netgalley with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog*** How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days by Kerrelyn Sparks Book One of The Embraced series Publisher: St. Martin's Press Publication Date: March 7, 2017 Rating: 4 stars Source: eARC from NetGalley ***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers*** Summary (from Goodreads): Luciana grew up on the Isle of Moon, hidden away because of her magical powers. But when her father arrives, he offers her a choice: remain on the island or return with him and marry the Beast of Benwick in order to save their legacy—and her father's life. Lord Leofric, the Beast of Benwick, has not been touched since he was a child. Born with the power to harness lightning, he is a danger to everyone he touches. When he meets his betrothed, he expects a loveless, lonely marriage...until he discovers she's vastly more powerful than he realized. But is she strong enough to withstand his touch? If they can survive, their love will alter the future of the kingdom. But will their extraordinary powers cost them everything? What I Liked: How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days is a funny, swoony, and sweet romance novel that is sure to charm readers. It's a quick read that will have you smiling throughout the story. I can't remember the last time I read a book (adult novel or otherwise) and felt light and happy during the entire thing. This book always had a light, hopeful, upbeat tone to it, even when there was the occasional dangerous scene. I really liked this book! Luciana grew up on the Isle of Moon in a convent with several other orphaned girls. She is Embraced, which means she has extraordinary magical powers. The story opens with her father arriving at the convent to take her with him. It turns out, she has a father, and she had a twin sister, but the twin, Tatiana, died. Luciana goes with her father in order to save him; if she doesn't pretend to be her dead twin Tatiana, and wed the Beast of Benwick, her father will be killed and the Vindalyn holdings would be seized by the greedy king. Leofric of Benwick, Lord Protector of the Realm, has quite the reputation. He is Embraced, and his touch kills. He gets struck by lightning and absorbs the power of the lightning, which makes him extremely powerful and extremely deadly. But Luciana finds that he is not the monster everyone makes him out to be. He is selfless and willing to die for her and her father, as well as the people he serves, as Lord Protector. Their marriage was ordered by the king, but no one expected them to fall for each other. The beginning is a little slow, but once Luciana and Leo meet (unofficially and then officially), I was really hooked. Their interactions were always interesting - and I was dying to know when Leo would find out who Luciana really was (remember, she is pretending to be her twin sister, who is actually dead). From the start, I knew I would like Luciana. She is so sweet and kind, and she has the interests of her convent sisters and her father at heart. She drops everything to save her father, even if it meant marrying the Beast of Benwick. And even in meeting Leo and getting to know him, Luciana looks at him with an open mind and an open heart. I love how sweet Luciana is. It's rare that you'll find a sweet yet assertive heroine in romance novels... Beauty and the Beast move over. How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days is the first in a new romantic paranormal fantasy world. There is something for everyone; magic, love, angst, ghosts, elves, good guys and bad, intrigue and murder. Kerrelyn Sparks has created a wonderful world where women are strong, good guys win and love trumps hate. I fell into this book and couldn’t get out till the very last page. I am so looking forward to my next trip into this exciting world.

How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days by Kerrelyn Sparks The Embraced #1 Loved this introduction to a wonderful new paranormal fantasy series filled with romance, intrigue, wondrous beasts and delightful characters. I found the prologue provided just enough information to set the hook that led me into the story. My guess is that the five sisters of the heart mentioned in chapter one will each get a book of their own and I look forward to reading each and every one of their stories. In book one Luciana learns she is not an orphan after all and has the opportunity to save her father’s life IF she is willing to return with him to his castle and marry Leo, The Beast of Benwick. With her skills of communing with ghosts, the need to keep her identity secret and an upcoming marriage to a man who can kill with a touch she is not sure what will happen but is willing to do what she can to save her father and his people. With assassins out to get her, ghosts telling her secrets and her growing attraction to Leo her life is never dull. Leo is equally attracted to his bride to be BUT worries that he won’t ever be able to touch her let alone consummate their marriage. This is a fun adult romance that has everything I like in a book. I was taken back to fairytales of childhood but with a more grownup story to read. I smiled at interactions, worried about characters, hoped that the hero and heroine would manage a HEA and am now eager to find out what will happen in future books of this series because this one was so very very entertaining. I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC. This is my honest review. 5 Stars

How to Tame A Beast in Seven Days is a twist on Beauty and The Beast that is even more beautiful than the original and far more magical than the Disney version. I volunteered to read a copy in exchange for my honest opinion and it was an eye opening experience. I am surprised how much I actually fell in love with this against the odds love story. Am not into the supernatural romance genre but Ms. Sparks latched on to something special with Luciana and Loefric. The characters, the author, the romance kept me spellbound to the point that I breezed through the story in one sitting and am looking forward to a second trip in this otherworldly awe filled tale.
