    I Also Recommend:

Great program for early reading program

I initally borrowed this book from my local library, thinking it would be interested to see what it takes to teach a baby to read, even though my toddler had just turned 2 years old. I tried out the method with a few flashcards and was amazed at how quickly my son picked it up. I immediately ordered this book, along with "How to Teach Your Baby Math" and "How to Teach Your Baby to be Physically Superb."

The first half of the book is devoted to the history of the Institutes of Human Potential and what they do for both brain-injured and "normal" children. It discusses in some detail the science behind how the program works and the ability for young children to learn.

The how-to's of the program are covered in the back half of the book. They detail how to start with any child up to age 6, which is helpful if you are starting past the newborn stage (like we did).

Some people disagree with the idea of using flashcards with young children, claiming you are taking the joy out of learning. But the key to a successful program is keeping it quick and fun. My son asks for his "words" everyday, several times a day and I enjoy watching him get excited about learning at such a young age.

If you are looking at this book for your infant or toddler, chances are, you are looking for ways to entertain your child beyond singing or reading books. And what better way to get them started on a path of lifelong learning than to get them hooked while they are young!

I am about to use this with 2nd generation

Years ago I used this method with my daughter. We never completed the whole program. She had a 3rd grade reading level when she started Kindergarden and finished high school at age 14. She is very bright, happy and successful. I now have a baby grandaughter and will also use this program to teach her. What I remember the most about teaching my daughter was the quality time we spent together which was priceless and to me the most important aspect of this program.

    Turely inspiring

I read most of Dr. Doman's book and tried the paper flash cards with my then two-month-old daughter with great response. To solve the problem of too much paper, I wrote software named PowerFlashCard to do the same thing. My whole family was amazed to see the little baby waving, kicking and screaming with joy in front of the laptop. Our initial doubt of the method was gone. Try it, you would not belive it until you did it.

Best book I read, and truly inspiring

I read most Dr. Doman¿s books after my daughter was born. I was already determined to do something with my newborn, his books definitely strengthened my believe, and gave methods to follow. I made dot cards and word cards. It was time consuming and expensive. Soon I developed software to replace paper flash cards. It was very effective. I added much more contents in math, reading, including foreign languages, and pictures into the program. There are people thinking I was crazy teaching a 3-month old. But you have to do it yourself to believe it. The time I put my daughter in front of the laptop, and she saw the flashing dots, she was waving, kicking, and screaming with joy. My whole family was amazed. My daughter is almost a year old now. She is very delightful, alert. She can point correctly to many objects, and words. Her learning speed is increasing daily. If you¿d like to try my software, it is at

    It really works!

I taught five of my children to read using this book, at ages 3 1/2 - 4 1/2. They've all done extremely well in school - because they knew how to read well before they got there. I starting using this book about 1980! Schools have tried many things since then, but this method worked for all my kids!

Don't Bother; there are better ways

I have read not only this book, but almost all put out by Doman and I am very familiar with the method. It is true that your child will recognize some words if you use this method. My own daughter could recognize 'teeth' at 14 months old. However, this method becomes time consuming, labor-intensive and boring quickly. It is more effective to teach phonics to your child, which you can do with almost no money or material preparation and which will give them a better reading foundation in the end.

    Proof that it works

I used the methods described in this book and today have 4 very successful reading children--two in college and two in high school. Highly recommend it.

    Wonderful Book

This book was very simple to read and understand. I read it in two days and I can't wait to start teaching my 16 month old to read.
