This is a great book that provides a lot of helpful information.

My girlfriend did the work of reviewing all availaible guides and picked this one for its comprehensive advice for all levels of runners: beginners through veterans. Includes 8 week, 16 week schedules, tips for nutritional preps and 'mindset' advice. Enjoyable to read and a realistic plan.
