If you're thinking of writing or have written but not sure what you did right or wrong and want to continue to write short stories without taking a class on it, this is great. It's organized well, direct and covers all of the basics needed for short-story writing. Even if you were taking a class on writing short-stories this is a great book to read on the side. It's great because it shows how much time, effort and creativity it takes to write short-stories. Once you go through this book it can and in my opinion definitely will enhance your understanding of the short-story mechanisms, allowing you to understand and to judge short stories better, more with these elements in mind, you'll take more out of short stories. If you are more focused on the writing side of the business, a good thorough reading of this book will prepare you for your class. Your teacher will obviously go in more detail and teach you things that are not in this book, but this book will prepare an understanding of the basic concepts of story writing that you will be able to take more out of your class and with a hard guideline and the exercises at the end of the chapter you'll write better stories. If you're not in class, but want to write short-stories, this obviously isn't the best book to solely rely on how to hone your craft. However it is a great starter's kit and will introduce to the creative side of short stories honestly and with a lot of encouragement. You will get everything you need in order to move up to the next step in short story writing.
