Editorial Reviews

Gayle M. Timmerman
This book contains comprehensive, useful information about the writing and publication process. This is a second edition, updated from the previous 1986 edition. The contents of the book include generating ideas, developing a writing plan, collaborative writing, targeting a nursing journal, gathering information, organizing content, communicating with editors, and writing and revising the manuscript. The purpose is to provide a process to help nurses write and be published. Dissemination of knowledge through publication is a critical endeavor necessary for the advancement of the nursing profession. The book meets the objectives by providing practical advice and using examples of published studies and interviews of numerous successful authors and editors to illustrate the ideas presented. The authors are credible experts in writing and publication. The book is written for a broad audience and is a must for any nurse interested in writing for publication. The book provides information that is useful for the novice interested in getting started and the more experienced writer, who will find information that will assist in expediting publication. Unique features of the book include brief exercises at the end of each chapter and numerous checklists and worksheets that facilitate the publication process. Of particular note is the appendix with the publication addresses of nursing journals and the planning form for collaborative writing. The sun diagrams, a creative visual writing tool for organizing ideas, are also helpful. This is an excellent book filled with practical advice to facilitate writing and getting published. The second edition is a needed update that includes informationon using advanced technology for writing assistance (i.e., online computer searches, table of computer readable databases, and use of Internet resources). This book is appropriate for library, bookstore, and individual purchase.
