More About This Book

Overview

How We Became Camels is a personal account of a mother and her fourteen-year-old daughter living in Bahrain, Yemen, and Egypt (with visits to the United Arab Emirates, Hawar Island, and Djibouti). Through humor and irony, this book portrays vivid, enchanting characters, as well as unusual and many times amusing and exhilarating experiences of "mother and Anne" living, working and surviving in the Middle East. It is a true story about the extraordinary, ordinary, and sometimes heart-wrenching encounters of two American females in an Arab world. How We Became Camels was written to share these experiences, which were everything from frustrating to sentimental-bizarre to poignant. Mother taught in the Middle East while daughter, Anne, attended high school. They laughed and cried, jumped for joy and wept for the world. Numerous people and events came into their lives. They brought smiles, heartache, disappointment, and love. As a result of their one-year experience, mother and daughter were changed for life-as were many others they encountered along the eventful journey.
