Overview

How Women Can Prevent Terrorism opens with a stomach-turning forecast of what could happen if the gap between the world's "haves" and "have-nots" continues to widen. Terrorism and conflict may claim 100 million lives by 2030 if we continue to ignore the hopelessness of 3 billion people trying to survive on less than $2 a day. Author Curt Weeden calls on women in industrialized countries to lead the way in demanding that more government foreign aid be used to support women and women's organizations in third world nations.

Weeden, one of the most widely recognized philanthropy experts in the U.S. and abroad, writes that women in poor countries must be given "the latitude and the resources to hose down the embers of discontent and hatred before they flame into a firestorm." Poverty may not always breed terrorism, Weeden acknowledges. However, poor people too often become a cheering section for terrorists in a way that encourages and celebrates acts of violence. How Women Can Prevent Terrorism makes a persuasive case as to why women must be on the front lines in the battle against worldwide poverty -- and not pushed to the side because of cultural, religious or social pressures. The book offers evidence to back up the claim that when women are given opportunity and resources, they will usually produce extraordinary results that mean a better life for their families, villages and themselves.

Weeden also adds this warning: poverty and hopelessness are likely to become more serious problems in those regions of the globe where the population is expected to swell. He reminds readers that more than 2 billion people will be added to the earth's population by 2050 and 96% of that growth will take place in developing nations where life is already a constant struggle. Weeden notes that birth rates in these locations can be curbed if women are given more leeway in making reproduction decisions. Frustration, envy and anger are building in the poorest parts of the world where information technology is letting people know just how canyon-sized the global "wealth gap" really is. Weeden offers well-documented evidence about how lethal technology is becoming more accessible to those who chose to use poverty as one of the reasons to lash out at the Western world. While How Women Can Beat Poverty explores a range of disheartening topics, the book repeats a message of hope. By opening up funding channels that empower women in the poorest regions of the world, we have the capacity to curb at least some of the discontent that can so easily become a seedbed for terrorism.
