Howard is like a lot of youngsters who have trouble listening and focusing during their daily activities at school and at home. He is loud and lively and full of himself, but his lack of attention and poor listening skills cause him lots of problems. His classroom friends and teacher are dismayed when he bounces around during story time--although he is a bunny, this is not the appropriate time for such boisterous action. The teacher's face (she is a goose) is fairly stern but she does say "please" when she admonishes him to be quiet and listen. Concrete examples abound as he fails to listen. His long rabbit ears get caught in the ceiling fan, he slips on a banana peel because he does not listen to the beaver's warnings, he hurts his friend's feelings (and her crocodile snout) because he "doesn't listen," and he gets a black eye when he fails to heed the team's alerting calls of "keep your eye on the ball." Because of his antics in the art room, he has to spend time in "time out," where he really begins to think about all of the things that have happened to him because he "did not listen." Once he makes up his mind to be a better listener, he tries extremely hard to "listen," which results in much happier experiences for him. He even gets extra play time for paying attention to his mother. The back matter includes seven steps for being a better listener and "listening discussion questions" for parents, teachers, caregivers, etc. to use to prompt observant discussions about Howard's need to listen. Careful listening is essential for safety and learning and enjoying life. Reading about and examining Howard's actions will help youngsters give thought to being better listeners themselves.

    What a great teaching tool!

    I'm a counselor for an elementary building where I read this book to both my preschool and kindergarten classes during our Listening Unit. They love Howard B. Wigglebottom! The illustrations are great and the stories are easy to relate. All 3 of the Wigglebottom books are worth purchasing!

    My Review: Last time I talked about Howard B. Wigglebottom he was learning about Sportsmanship. This time Howard is about to learn about Listening.

    Howard is always in trouble at school because he doesn’t listen even when told by his teacher during story time to stop bouncing around the room and sit down and be quiet. But Howard doesn’t listen. And because he doesn’t listen Howard was always in trouble. He slipped because he didn’t listen to his friends trying to warn him about the banana peel on the floor. Instead of being still on the playground while playing baseball, Howard would hop around and didn’t keep his eye on the ball.

    It all came to a head when in art class; Howard didn’t listen to the teacher about trying to keep the paint on the paper and not on the table. So the teacher asks him to take a time out. While he was doing time out Howard felt so sad, he did not like being alone and in trouble. He made up his mind to be a good listener and received a #1 Listener star.

    This is a wonderful and engaging book for children to learn how to become a better listener. The Today’s Lesson at the end of the book teaches children to sit quietly, use both eyes and ears to help with listening, not to interrupt and wait their turn to talk and listening discussion questions. Great illustration which helps tells the story.

    I highly recommend this book for every household with children and for classroom teaching.

    Highly Recommend for First Graders

    I'm a first grade teacher and we read this book several times a year. It gets to the point towards the end of the year they have it memorized. They absolutely love Howard! There is repetition on every page "But Howard doesn't listen" and "Howard is really listening" which makes it interactive for students. They love it. I'm going to purchase other Howard B. Wigglebottom books to add to my collection.
