A jolly bit of nonsense song is enlivened by imaginative design and typography, with wit and humor enhanced by Radunsky's comic gouache and collage pictures. "You stick out your little hand to every woman, kid, and man and you wave it up and down" adding the title refrain. Each verse takes the happy canine greeter to a different place or new encounter, with the silly "Howjee, heejee, hijee, hojee, Howdi do, sir, doodle too" etc. chorus repeated. It's hard not to chant, sing, or giggle along. A CD accompanies the trade edition, with the title song and two more by Guthrie performed in a lively fashion by the Band of Weeds. Also included are Radunsky's recorded exchanges with students at P.S. 89, with more giggles. Humans and anthropomorphic cats and dogs do their things against blank backgrounds that emphasize the zany actions. 2000, Candlewick Press, Ages 3 to 6, $12.99. PreS-Gr 1-A little yellow dog in a purple-and-white plaid shirt greets everyone walking down the street-man, woman, cat, child-and soon the entire neighborhood is shaking hands to the words of "Howdi Do." Full of exuberant wordplay, the song has a rollicking, nonsensical chorus that is perfectly matched to Radunsky's art. Done in gouache and collage, the vibrant illustrations are full of movement as the characters jump, run, and dance across the pages in time to the happy words. The basic shapes and bright colors, often in startling stripes and patterns, echo the simplicity and na vet of the piece. In the midst of all of this joyous abandon, readers might be tempted to ask, "Well, what happens next?" In fact, not much-except perhaps another round of the song. Radunsky (An Edward Lear Alphabet, 1999, etc.) suspends collage people constructed with large pieces of brightly colored, painted, or patterned paper over infectiously feelgood lyrics that invite readers and listeners to "stick out your little hand to every woman, kid and man," while singing out the "Howjee, heejee, hijee, hojee, how di do, sir, doodle doo" nonsense chorus. Who could resist? The words and music for this classic toe tapper are printed inside the dust jacket; the trade edition is packaged with a free CD. Along with 1998's edition of This Land Is Your Land, illustrated by Kathy Jacobsen, here's proof that both the breadth and the depth of vision in Guthrie's music can survive the transition to another medium.
