... Cameron put the backpack down onto the dresser. "Do you want to get an early dinner?"
Jacob paused. "Wouldn't your mate mind that I'm taking up most of your Saturday?" He winced inside, ashamed for the barely concealed inquiry beneath the question, but still unable to stop himself from asking it.
Cameron turned to look Jacob square in the face. "I don't have a mate," he said, voice gruff. "Never needed one. Never wanted one." And before Jacob knew it, Cameron was standing in front of him, his presence a solid wall of heat.
Jacob didn't move, didn't dare even to breathe as he looked into Cameron's eyes. He was startled to see them faintly glowing gold--it indicated that his primal side was awake and coming to the fore. He didn't flinch away from Cam, nor did he look down as a more submissive werewolf might. I'm not a werewolf, he thought, gazing straight into Cameron's eyes, knowing that his wolf spirit might take it as a challenge. The glow intensified until Cameron's pupils were surrounded by golden irises, and still Jacob didn't look away.
The glow slowly faded. Cameron raised trembling fingers to his cheek and traced a line gently down the side of his face. Jacob's heart stopped at the naked desire in his eyes.
"I thought I'd never get to touch you again," Cameron whispered.
Something inside Jacob broke at the words, grief flooding him. I was wrong, he wanted to say. I was wrong to leave like I did. But oh God I was so scared, I was so afraid. You made me feel things I never thought I'd ever feel for another man. The words shriveled and died before he even parted his lips. Guilt strangled him, guilt and sorrow and a sense of loss. They weren't twenty anymore. A gaping chasm stood between them, and he didn't know how to cross it. He didn't even know where to begin.
"Cam," he choked out, lowering his head and closing his stinging eyes.
He felt Cameron's hand cup his chin firmly, tilting his face up, and Jacob opened his eyes just as Cameron's mouth descended on his. Shock ran through him at the touch of his lips, pressed hot and hard against his. Everything fell away, and there was only Cameron.
Despite his best intentions, Jacob kissed him back. When he parted his lips, Cameron took possession of his mouth, his tongue moving sensually across Jacob's lips before dipping in to stroke his own. A low growl sounded deep in Cameron's throat when Jacob let out a soft groan. Cameron's fingers slid up to the back of his neck and into his hair, tugging gently.
Jacob wanted him, more than he'd ever wanted anyone in his life. He hadn't seen Cam in years, but it felt like none of it had ever happened--the confusion, the fear, the rash decision to leave, the years in between.
Silently Cameron pulled Jacob into his arms, holding him tightly against his chest for a moment before releasing him. He raised his hand and tenderly touched Jacob's lips, and then he turned and strode out of the room without a word.
Jacob stood there frozen for a few moments before slowly sinking down onto the bed, his gaze fixed on the empty doorway.
