With H.R. Giger's work, and in particular with Necronomicon II, our age at last contributes something truly definitive to the until recently incomplete project of Modern Art (something 'post-modernism' has consistently cowared from): First, an accurate exhibition of a metaphysical vision through pictures: each picture is a re-stated expression of a single conceptual image. This image is also an all-embracing idea, and it is presented in the (appropriately surrealistic) character of a dream: a (freudian) dream of desire with the (quasi-deleuzian) desiring machinery of the unconscious as its object. In other words: a dramatic image of the unconscious dreaming of possessing itself with a specular, machinic eroticism. Secondly, this metaphysical vision complements itself by using two occasionalistic poles for the true completion of its presentation. One pole is Giger's heuristic function (definitely an ever-present part of his art's performative value) that affirms creative freedom as the property of artistic thought/praxis. He intervenes in the mind of the spectator by reviving, with the effects of his images, a rather rousseaunian sentiment: 'every human is born free; yet everywhere he is in (sexual/mechanical psychological) chains'. This condition of bondage may itself be spun into an affirmation of a dionysian form of freedom; yet Giger's static and frigid portrayal of eroticism suggests that the artist's intention lies elsewhere. By leading the viewer to behold this embrace of the unconscious with itself (as in certain figures which seem to merge -sexually- two humanoid forms into a single one), implicitly proclaims the already present possibility that it is the viewer's freedom, like that of the artist, animating creatively the expressively sensitive contemplation of this psychic chaining (a sort of 'master' and 'slave' indifferentiation of the psyche). Indeed, Giger's intention may be to show that the creative powers of fascination and horror owned by the viewer is what gives artistic -and conceptual- life to the idea of the prison of machinic desire encountered in his pictures. In the end, Giger's work can be said to be not just a metaphysical vision, but an emancipatory speculative experience.

If the necronomicon wasnt enough here comes part two. In this book you will witness the continuing darkside of swizerlands finest artist. With hundreds of painting and sketches you can almost see inside geigers mind. Five stars also, and a perfected follow up of the first one. Really worth the money.
