It is of course not just HTML5 that is covered by the book, as perhaps could be inferred from the title. CSS3 is the twin of HTML5 and the narrative discusses in detail how the 2 can be used to improve your iPhone offerings. For example, one section explains how CSS3 lets you delegate renderings in Safari (which is Apple's native browser) down to the hardware. Whereas alternatives prior to CSS3 for Apple hardware, and alternatives for Android, need the renderings to be controlled via javascript. Anytime you can let hardware do the work is a speedup over software, in general. And it also tends to reduce the size of your source code; hence reducing the chances of errors. So a hardware speedup and a diminishing of errors! The book also goes into more conventional areas. Like describing the Model View Controller pattern, which the reader should be well familiar of prior to this. Or the use of geolocation with Google Maps, via the App.Location. Many applications need location awareness. It has emerged as a fundamental feature and one chapter gives a good set of examples. Another improvement is the ability to save data onto the phone via the localStorage API. Typically, storage has consisted of accessing offline storage via the network. But what if the network is inaccessible, which can often happen. Or if the bandwidth is so low that storing offline takes too long. Local storage avoids all this and of course is always there. Assuming enough vacancy for your needs.
