Hug, Hug, Hug!: A Bea and HaHa Book

Overview

HaHa does not understand why Bea is hugging a blanket – until they share its cozy delights.

Bea and HaHa (an adorable hippo and a small ferret) are the best of friends, but they don’t always get along. Perhaps it is because they are so different from each other: excitable, verbal HaHa is always trying to make sense of solid, confident Bea,
who says very little. These two ...

who says very little. These two charming stories, featuring bright, graphic art, are centered on fundamental objects and experiences of early childhood: cuddling a security blanket and sharing a bagel.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Two new Bea and HaHa board books by Emily Jenkins, illus. by Tomek Bogacki, introduce kids to the concept of sharing. Hug, Hug, Hug! depicts the two little creatures learning to share a blanket, while Num, Num, Num! centers around sharing HaHa's favorite food: a bagel with jam. This is a board book in the "Bea and HaHa" series which features a clever ferret and a not so clever hippo. HaHa is the ferret and it appears that this ferret is a male. Bea the big blue hippo appears to be a female. In this story she has her blanket and will not let go of it. She just keeps hugging it. HaHa tries to convince her that blankets are for babies. Furthermore it is not cold and therefore she does not need a blanket, but in the end he asks to share the blanket and Bea obliges. Who is smarter, I am not sure, but Bea tends to just pretty much ignore HaHa. 2006, Frances Foster Books/ Farrar Straus and Giroux, Ages 3 mo. to 2.

PreS-Bea is a silent, gentle blue hippo. Her friend HaHa is a talkative, curious green ferret. Each of these books begins with Bea holding an object. In Hug, Hug, Hug!, it's a blanket, and in Num, Num, Num! it's a bagel. HaHa notices it, asks about it, and then pesters about it. The characters are shown thinking about the situation, and the final spread shows them sharing and smiling at one another. The rhythmic language is fun to read aloud. Each page ends with the same phrase, inviting young listeners to chant along. Bogacki's illustrations are sweet, playful, and slightly offbeat, with colors that are rich and vivid. The only things on the page are the two characters and the object. The warmth and simplicity will make these titles popular with toddlers.-Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
