Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: David W. Brzezinski, MD(University of Michigan Medical School)
Description: This entry level human anatomy book is arranged systemically and assumes that the student has little or no background in biology or chemistry. As such, it describes all aspects of human anatomy in a very complete and comprehensive manner.
Purpose: The book proposes to introduce students to the broad and complex discipline of human anatomy assuming they have little or no background in the basic sciences. It supplies the reader with all relevant background material and then builds upon this material to teach the student the fundamentals of human gross anatomy. The book aims to be comprehensive and accurate while maintaining ease of use and readability. When addressing the vast amount of information that comprises human gross anatomy, such a goal is more than worthy. Happily, the authors met and surpassed their goals.
Audience: This is aimed primarily at undergraduate students whose careers will be in some aspect of healthcare. The authors state that these students are their target audience. Both authors have a tremendous amount of experience teaching such students. However, as a physician, I think that professional students will also benefit greatly from this book as an additional resource.
Features: The book introduces students to the vast field of human gross anatomy while providing them with all necessary background information needed to understand and remember the material. The text provides excellent narration to the systemic approach of human anatomy while providing excellent illustrations and art. The book is expertlyarranged and is very readable. Multiple different media are employed, and the book encourages an active approach to learning. The book strives to incorporate clinical significance at every relevant point. Finally, each chapter ends with a summary, review, method of assessing one's learning, and a section encouraging and developing the student's critical thinking skills.
Assessment: This is a very reader-friendly text which both undergraduate and graduate students will appreciate. Its coverage is accurate and in depth, while at the same time readable. It fosters true active learning, and is written in a style that all students will appreciate. I have seen only a few books that rival the complete and balanced overview which this book provides. I highly recommend it to both undergraduate and professional students. The clinical correlations and artwork are worth the investment alone!
