Laney's been used her entire life, but her escape allows her to live for the first time. In a new town, with a new name, Laney, now Julie Miller finally gets to experience the life she never had before. She finds a job, meets friends, and even finds herself a boyfriend, but all of that could slip through her fingers if her pursuers catch up with her. And let's face it, pursuers don't give up that easily. Lori Pescatore's self-published novel is a thrilling mystery with a paranormal twist and romance that sizzles off the page. Julie, the main character, is kind and strong, with a personality that lures the reader (and everyone else) in. The mystery about who Julie's running from is revealed little by little as she acclimates to a new town and a new life. Austin, Julie's first friend and soon to be boyfriend, is funny and sweet. The young doctor that takes in interest in Julie, Eli Elsworth, is swoon-worthy and, much like Austin, beyond sweet. Pescatore slowly unravels Julie's story and her abilities, but keeps the edge on my throwing in plenty of surprises, not to mention the hotness factor goes off the chart at times. The characters are all well-written and unique. I found myself completely engrossed in the story, desperate to find out why Julie has these powers and just what is up with this doctor. The minor characters that appear do wonders for the story. Small, seemingly insignificant scenes/characters are more than they appear and I loved that. It's not often I read self-published books, but I am so happy that I read this one. Well-written, unique, and filled with interesting characters, Pescatore's debut is astoundingly fresh. Though because of some of those steamy scenes, I'd say this one is probably for a slightly older crowd. Nothing is explicitly stated, but there's still some hot and heavy making out. My only complaint is that there are a few issues with tense (past to present) but not too much to really bother me. That, and the romance picks up very quickly, but that's pretty well explained. Human Blend is a distinctly original paranormal mystery that will make you grip the edge of your seat one minute, laugh out loud the next, then make you fan yourself from all the sexy hot makeout sessions. Pescatore has captured both my attention and my heart with her story and her characters. The cliffhanger ending has me yearning for more of Julie's story and I only hope that Pescatore is hard at work on it. Opening line: She vowed to be more careful this time. ~ pg. 1 Favorite line: "Face it, Julie, your life screams 'damsel in distress'," Marcus commented back. ~ pg. 224

Human Blend, the first book in this enchanting trilogy, is an intriguing tale of a young woman trying to live a "normal life" after an escape from vicious captors. The main character, Laney, chooses to start fresh in small town Marion, Virginia. With knowledge of the seedy world she's recently escaped from, she changes her look and identity to that of Julie Miller, hospice volunteer. She is different from everyone else, beautiful and gifted in ways that make her extremely valuable in the wrong hands. Julie wants to figure out why she's so different, having been orphaned as a small child. A puppet for criminals, she's been left with endless questions and no answers. The thing that makes Julie happiest is helping people feel better...and she's exceptional at her work. She befriends two locals, Austin and Eli. Austin is a charming young man of 18 years who wants nothing more than to go to college and become a teacher, all the while tethered to his mother's laundromat legacy. Austin becomes quite smitten with a guarded Julie. He knows she's running from something and he wants to protect her. Eli, a surgeon married to his work, observes Julie's special talents at the hospital and wants to help her. Both men are magnetically drawn to Julie. She is equally drawn to them which creates fascinating interactions and leaves the reader anticipating what is to come. Lori Pescatore gives her characters wonderful depth and personality that make this such an easy story to fall into. The storyline twists and turns creating an exciting, powerful tale that will keep you riveted to your seat from start to finish. A highly recommended read! -Samantha, Ohio

This was a great find! I didn't put it down except when I realized it was 5am! The story is great YA fiction about a girl trying to find out who she is as she runs from a dark and haunting past. Guess what SHE HAS POWERS! As she runs from her past, she meet people who get her, but will her past catch up with here and keep her running or will she finally find a place to call home?

Reading Laney's story was like being on a roller coaster. One minute I was in happy, love land with her and the next I was on edge worried about who was after her. I was suspicious of every new character she met and I just knew someone was going to pop out to get her at anytime. When she strolls into town she immediately draws the attention of Austin a local boy in the small town of Marion and they quickly become involved. Sometimes when a couple forms quickly in a book like this it really bothers me but for some reason Laney and Austin just felt right together from the first conversation. I like that Laney wants to be strong and independent but still has vulnerabilities like a normal person. This book goes from a sweet love story to an exciting and thrilling paranormal adventure with a lot of twists and turns. I loved the originality of this paranormal young adult novel. I am really looking forward to reading book 2.

Just when everyone starts grousing that paranormal has been done to death and there's nothing else to explore, along comes something new. "Human Blend" by Lori Pescatore introduces a new breed of supernatural being to readers, one that's fresh, exciting, and unique. Pescatore builds suspense over what kind of beings her characters are by delaying full revelations until later in the novel. "Human Blend" starts with an eighteen-year-old named Laney on the run. While not really eighteen, she ages slowly, so she's actually older than she appears. Kidnapped as a child, she's been used and abused for years due to her special abilities. She's always been good at seeing numbers, making it easy to predict things like lottery numbers and horse race winners, making her valuable to the men who want her back after she makes her escape. Disguising herself as "Julie Miller," she begins to reinvent herself in a small town in Virginia, where the men chasing after her can never find her...or so she thinks. Early on, she meets a college student named Austin, who introduces her to the area. It isn't long before the two are involved in a serious relationship with one another. Julie's nervous, though; everyone she ever lets into her life winds up getting hurt due to the fact that they know her thanks to the men she's hiding from and her unwanted powers. To complicate matters even more, Julie finds herself attracted to Dr. Eli Elsworth, who works at the local hospital she volunteers at. In addition to being good with numbers, Julie is also a healer. Not only that, there's more to Eli than meets the eye as well. He knows about Julie's abilities and wants her helping out at the hospital. The two have remarkable chemistry, but both attempt to hide from it due to Julie's relationship with Austin. The novel picks up speed once Pescatore lays out her world. The second half of the book is full of action and suspense. There are parts that are true nail-biters, and when Human Blend reaches its conclusion, readers are left wanting to know what happens next, especially with the introduction of new characters leading up to the next story arc. The second book is scheduled to be released later this spring, the second in a trilogy. Throughout the novel, I had a few questions regarding backstory and how these characters became what them are. I wanted to know more about what happened before Laney/Julie arrived in Virginia. Luckily, the second book will begin as a prequel with all of the events leading up to "Human Blend" before moving forward to "current day." "Human Blend" started out as a Smashwords novel. It can be bought digitally for nook, etc. for the low price of $2.99. The book is also available in paperback. The early edition of the book has a few typos and inconsistencies, but nothing that can't be overlooked once the story takes over. While marketed as a teen book, be warned that this title is for older teens and adults. It has both sexuality and violence in it and shouldn't be presented to anyone not mature enough to handle such themes.

My thoughts...Author Lori Pescatore is a fresh face in the world of paranormal authors. She introduces readers to an exciting new world of mysterious beings. Human Blend is a very original story of a girl who is hiding from her past. The heroine Laney, changes her identity and tries to make a new life in a small town in Virgina. Unfortunately for her, this is not as easy as it sounds. Laney has the special ability to heal illness and pain in others. Her character is very multi-dimensional. I noticed a very strong, determined side of her, but also a side that has seen the dark side too many times. There are several other characters that are memorable, including a kind doctor and the gentle Austin. I had a hard time deciding which one I liked better. The story is written with a great blend of mystery, action, romance, and suspense. For me, the best part of the story was the introduction of some new paranoramal beings. Their inclusion felt believable. There are also plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing. The ending will definitely leave you wanting more. If I would have seen this book on the shelf, I would have passed it up. I am not bowled over by the cover or the title. Fortunately, I saw several great reviews that spurred me to read it. I was not disappointed and I definitely recommend this book to fans of YA paranormal books!

I have learned that some great stories come in the form of self published material. This would be one of them. Human Blend is the story of Julia, otherwise known as Laney in her previous settings, and her struggle to be normal. With abilities that far surpass that of a normal human she knows she is different despite her lack of knowledge about her true capabilities or her origin. Laney finds a fresh start as Julia after she finds herself wanting to settle in a small town. She has a rule of not getting close to people and despite all her attempts she finds herself doing just that with not one, but two individuals who both, unknowingly or not, harbor secrets of their own. Both of these men who Julia finds herself being drawn to and accepting some sort of affection from are also both pulled into the web that is "Laney's" past. With Lori's character development I couldn't help but really invest myself into a few of the characters, I don't believe I need to even mention which two really caught my attention. I also found Julia's personality very likable, she was exceptionally strong but extremely vulnerable. The complex of each character seemed real and never wavered. We never had any real Jekyll and Hyde moments which was an absolute plus and kept the story consistent. Lori did a wonderful job at writing a unique and mysterious story that I really had no clue what was going on until it was happening. Set at a wonderful pace the highlights of the plot, and the intricacy of how the whole story came together, really shined through. I really did love this story and can't wait for book #2 of the Human Blend trilogy. The only thing I didn't care for about this book is my inability to actually write a review without giving something away, that is how well and intricate this story fits together. That really isn't something to complain about, is it?

I've been pretty fortunate lately when it comes to reading books with creative plots. I guess you could say I've been on a winning streak. Lori Pescatore has helped keep my streak alive with Human Blend. Although Human Blend was based on characters with supernatural abilities, Lori Pescatore seemed to capture the "natural" character of real life. Let me explain without giving away too much. There are those who walk among us on a day-to-day basis looking to exploit anything or anyone they can in order to make life a little easier for themselves. What if those people were to find a "super" being, if you will, that could make them rich and powerful? This is where I see Human Blend not too far from reality, and it makes for a very compelling read. While I did love the characters, there were a few things that made them less than perfect to me. The main character, Julie Miller (Laney), seemed somewhat weaker than I wanted her to be. Her mind was telling the reader how strong she was, but her actions seemed to defy them once in awhile. New girl, new life, staying low because people are looking for her, but yet she meets a guy on the first day in a new town and spends the day with him. I just felt the character would have been a little more realistic if she were more cautious than that. The other characters, Austin and Eli, the new men in Julie's life also seemed a little too quick to have so much emotion for this new girl in town. The dialogue in Human Blend was a little too forced for my taste. There were certain lines said between characters that were almost a "given" to the reader and didn't need to be written out. I would like to have read more actions from the characters explaining what needed to be said. I think it would have flowed a bit better for me. Lori Pescatore's Human Blend was very addictive, aside from my dialogue qualms. The love triangle between Julie, Austin, and Eli still have me scratching my head as to what team I'm on. The supernatural world that was built was fascinatingly innovative and I cannot wait to read more about the "Blends" and the "Earthlings". I hear there is a trilogy and I will definitely be reading on. LJ from Reader Recommended

Laney escapes from a life where she has been used by others for their own personal gain. Having escaped as far away as possible, Laney, now Julie Miller, finally gets to experience the life she never had before. She is immediately befriended by two individuals; Austin, a teen who soon becomes more than just a friend, and Eli, a doctor who is fascinated and intrigued by her supernatural abilities. She finds a job as a volunteer at a local hospital and develops numerous great relationships, however, Laney aka Julie is unceasingly aware that all this could be taken away from her in a split second if 'they' find her. Julie's history and supernatural abilities are slowly unraveled throughout the course of the book. New characters appear throughout the story and they each serve a purpose in Julie's quest to make a new life and at the same time, they help answer so many questions that lead her to discover who and what she really is. Lori Pescatore's self-published novel "Human Blend" will keep you wanting more. It is filled with mystery, romance and a paranormal twist. What immediately drew me to this story was the uniqueness of the characters. Lori Pescatore has a remarkable talent in creating such unique supernatural abilities which have not yet been seen in other books of this genre. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat, leaving you wanting to know more. I am so thrilled to have had the opportunity of reading this book. It was very well-written, unique, filled with passion and mystery. I definitely recommend this book to all who enjoy paranormal novels, with plenty of romance and mystery! Lori Pescatore's "Human Blend" is an enjoyable read with a cliffhanger ending, leaving you wanting to find out what comes next in the next book of this trilogy. I will be keeping an eye out for Lori Pescatore's next book! 4.5/5 - Fabulous Read, Highly Recommended

~The Story BLENDed Into Me~ I had this book in my Nook for a long time and never got to reading it until I moved. Mainly because all my books are still packed so all I had was my Nookie. Julie was one of the characters you love to hate. I liked her being strong but hated...and understood...why she crumbled when her past caught up to her. Yes Lori you know you did a great job if you had me having mental conversations with Julie and that was a good sign because it told me that I liked the story. Eli was the other character I liked instantly and when he let his true nature come out the transformation was exciting. I was pulled into Julie's lives along with all the others that came into play and I'm looking forward to reading the next because yep my books are still packed. I will be enjoy Earth Blend on my Nook and can't wait to see what happens next.
