Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Mission: Science" series, Jankowski offers a well-written overview of the twelve major systems in our body. Students will recognize some of these systems. For example, the cardiovascular system will be familiar if for no other reason than you can hear your heartbeat. Still, most students probably do not yet know how their heart is connected to the veins and arteries throughout the body. And when they get to the digestive system, they learn the fun fact that "[t]he average human's stomach capacity is around 1 quart (1 liter), but that stomach can be stretched to hold up to four times that amount." With its fun facts and clear writing, Jankowski's book will be read from cover to cover, as well as by those students in search of specific details for a report. Near the book's end is a section about physical activity and the effect of fitness on some of the body systems. Illustrations include medical drawings of the organs, as well as photos of athletes and medical researchers. The science activity is an experiment in checking friends' sense of smell. Backmatter includes a glossary, a list of important people in medicine, a timeline of medical discoveries, a list of additional resources, and an index. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
