Relaunch of the Scholastic Science Readers with brand new covers, photographs, and interior designs.

A very simple introduction to the major parts of the human body and how they work together to keep us alive. The importance of the brain is clearly discussed, and how our various senses send messages to the brain. Acting on these messages takes energy, which comes from food. The body also needs oxygen. Blood enables us to use both oxygen and the energy from our food. Awake or asleep, our bodies are amazing!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Everyone should learn basic body parts and it doesn't hurt to start at a very young age. It will enable children to communicate better when they have hurt themselves or are feeling ill. In this Level 1"Scholastic Reader" there is a spread that identifies the outside body parts and inside body parts. Then there is a skeleton to show the various bones. Readers will learn that different areas of the tongue can identify whether a food is salty, sour, bitter or sweet. These taste buds send the appropriate message to the brain. The nose can tell if something smells good or bad. The brain sends messages to the muscles to tell them how to move. Food gives the body the energy it needs to make the muscles respond to the commands from the brain. The heart pumps oxygen and sugars from food to all the body parts. Sleep is also important because your body needs to rest, but the heart keeps working when you are asleep as do other parts of the body. This very simple introduction contains diagrams and pictures of kids with various body parts and functions labeled. It is an easy way to digest a lot of facts. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
