Overview

About the Author

MICHAEL WINDELSPECHT is Assistant Professor of Biology at Appalachian State University. He is the author of two books in Greenwood's Groundbreaking Scientific Experiments, Inventions, and Discoveries through the Ages series, author of The Digestive System, coauthor of The Lymphatic System, and editor of Greenwood's Human Body Systems series.

Gr 6 Up-Good resources for serious inquiries into human physiology, medicine, and even the history of science. These independent but uniformly designed volumes examine the functions and structures of a particular system, from the skeletal to the lymphatic, then go on to describe relevant medical research past and present and, finally, associated diseases and treatments. The scanty illustrations are, mostly, simple labeled drawings, with an admixture of small, drab black-and-white photos and, in each volume, a modest color section-but the meaty texts compensate for the unappealing design. In Circulatory, for instance, readers will find (among much else) a detailed description of the arterial wall's complex structure, an account of the invention of the stethoscope by Rene-Theophile-Hyacinthe La'nnec, and a reference to recent study that uncovered a beneficial effect of nicotine. This set merits consideration as an updated companion for Renato Dulbecco's multivolume Encyclopedia of Human Biology (Elsevier, 1997); the individual volumes are also solid candidates for circulating collections.-John Peters, New York Public Library Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
