Editorial Reviews

Jean-Jacques Hublin
If you could only have one book that deals with human evolution, this is definitely the one to choose.
Nature
Booknews
Klein (anthro, U. of Chicago) summarizes our current knowledge and ongoing debates about human evolution from the earliest primates to modern man. Both the fossil and archaeological evidence are examined, showing the relationship between human form and behavior. A highly detailed, well-illustrated and accessible monograph. Annotation c. Well-written stepping stone into more technical side of paleoanthropology

Klein's careful examination of the existing evidence concerning hominid evolution shines through every printed word of this text. In fact, this book has oftentimes been recommended to me over Wolpoff's Paleoanthropology due to its fairly objective nature. The new edition contains an extra introductory chapter that explains and immerses the reader in the technical terminology used in referring to morphology, evolution, and geology. The section on Neanderthals and the 'cultural explosion' around 50 kya is probably the most extensive I've read so far (and this happens to be the author's own area of specialty). My only regret is that Klein did not undertake a more thorough scrutiny into early hominid evolution, especially the australopithecines. All in all, a remarkably well-written and surprisingly affordable book.
