Children's Literature
In the second Matthew McGhee book, Matt is an ordinary boy with a loving family, a best friend and a pretty strong tetherball serve. He also might be an alien. He heard his parents talking about sending him somewhere far away and the next day, he finds a purple spot on his arm. As if these were not enough problems, Matthew also has to write a story for class, but he has nothing interesting to write about. Kids will be able to relate to the title character, an imaginative boy who struggles with both a school assignment and bullies. The chapters are short and easily managed by struggling readers. The illustrations are humorous, but the text is still the main focus. While the story will not be a classic, it is an enjoyable book and would be great practice for readers. 2004, Aladdin, Ages 6 to 9.—Heather Robertson
