Overview

The definition of humanism has been a subject of diverse interpretation almost since the movement began. Some people have been called or call themselves humanists without any clear understanding of what it means. Different factions have arisen such as religious humanists and secular humanists, groups that have often disagreed over matters of definition, but are one in their advocacy of the basic goals.

But what is a humanist? And how are we to distinguish the various stripes of humanists? More importantly, how are we to separate humanism as humanists understand it from that which is criticized by the far right?

After an introduction to the earliest ideas of and terms for humanism in the ancient world, noted humanist Nicolas Walter gives an account of the original appearance and first meanings of "humanist" in the Italian Renaissance and of "humanism" in the German Enlightenment, and a survey of varying uses by diverse groups and individuals, until the gradual adoption of the term by the early freethought movement and the eventual establishment of a new humanist movement.

Drawing on personal experience and information from more than 400 sources, this is the first full-length treatment of the subject, concluding with a manifesto of modern humanism.

    Shinx's Light by Jaysoar/Shinx

    Chapter Two: Betrayal<br>

    <p>Tomorrow night.<br>

<p>Shinx stand up during midnight, when his new friend Pikachu told him. He yawned and wiggled out of the den silently without waking his heavy-sleeping mother.<br>

<p>Shinx turned his head towards the outline of the old tree followed by the high moon shining over it. Pikachu could be waiting in the hollow. He raced up the hill but stopped. Pikachu wasn't here yet.<br>

<p>Shinx circled the tree, in case he was around it, but wasn't. He wasn't in the hollow either. 'Where is he?' Shinx thought. He jumped into the hollow and yawned. Maybe Pikachu was late. He circled the hollow inside, laid down, and closed his eyes.<br>

    <p>"Luxray!"<br>

<p>The sound of Luxray's voice woke Shinx up. He looked around, eyes wide.<br>

    <p>"Lux! Help!"<br>

    <p>There is Shinx's mother's voice again.<br>

    <p>"Ahhh!!!! Lux Luxray!!!!"<br>

<p>Shinx got up on trembling legs, his tail between his legs. He jumped out of the hollow and rested his paws on the grass. It is still night, but a dash of pink is far off in the distance of the sky. He have been sleeping for hours! Where was Pikachu? What's wrong with his mother? Without hesitating, he dashed toward the hollow.<br>

<p>The sound of Luxray's scream grew louder and louder the more closer Shinx have gotten towards the den. More pokemon voices started to mix in inside the den.<br>

    <p>"Make it fast!"<br>

    <p>"Why?! I'm just having some fun!"<br>

<p>"Because we don't want that Shinx to hear us!"<br>

<p>'Is that Pikachu's voice?!' Shinx thought then haulted. He slipped to the side of the den to listen.<br>

<p>"Fine! Make it your way, Mr. Fun killer!"<br>

<p>"Call me in any kind of name, but it isn't going to effect out mission!"<br>

    <p>'Mission?'<br>

    <p>"Hhph."<br>

<p>A slash suddenly rang through the den followed by Luxray's screech. Shinx, without thinking, ran in to see one of the most horrible things in his life.<br>

    <p>Luxray is dead.<br>

<p>A Arcanine was in there, his muzzle splattered with shimmering scarlet. Followed by a young but strong Torchic and a Pikachu. Shinx froze. PIKACHU?!<br>

<p>"Cancel the mission!" Arcanine screamed into Pikachu's ear. But Pikachu didn't listen. He gazed at Shinx with a icy stare. "We can't cancel it! We already did it!" Torchic squeaked at Arcanine. After a long silence, Pikachu smiled. He turned to the Arcanine and Torchic, who are both ready to attack each other, and mouthed the words, "kill the Shinx."<br>

<p>Arcanine gave out a mighty roar a pounce, paws outstretched and feirce red claws out. Shinx rolled to the side quickly, but Torchic sliced a talon at Shinx's ear. Shinx landed badly on four paws, feeling blood on the right side of his face. Arcanine uses a fiery flamethrower at Shinx. He rolled to the side again and froze.<br>

<p>Pikachu started to glow yellow, then he gave out a thunderbolt at its target. Hitting with Shinx with great strength, Shinx fell to the ground, trembling. Torchic ran towards Shinx, ready to use her talons on him again.<br>

<p>'These guys don't play right!' Shinx thought when he was sliced by Torchic's talons again and hit the side of the den. 'I-I must run!' Shinx got up on trembling paws and raced towards the entrance. "He's getting away!" Arcanine screeched. Shinx looked over his shoulder to see Torchic on his tail. He is so close to the entrance and jumped out. Torchic tripped over, leaving her in Shinx's dust.<br>

    <p>Shinx ran away.<br>

The ultimate Pokemon story chapter 1.

You open the door to Prof. Oaks lab. "Ah yes there you are Blue! Heres your Bulbasaur." You sigh. "Aww man. I wanted Charmander." Oak nods sympatheticly. "Its hard getting a pokemon you didnt want. But you still need to treat it the same way you would Charmander. Besides if you take the gym leader challenge Bulbasaur will be a great help." "He will?" You look suprised. Oak nodded. "Thats right. Charmander is bad against Rcok, the 1 gym. Water is good against Fire and the 2 gym is Water. Squirtle is good against Rock but Water cancels each other out. And Electric and Grass, the 3&4 gyms, are both good against Water. But Bulbasaur is Grass making it easy to beat Rock and Water. And have you ever tried to electrify grass? Electricity can do almost nothing against Grass! Though the 4 gym is Grass too so you would get canceled out i suppose." You feel excited. "Awesome! I guess Grass is way better then Fire then! Com'on Saur! Lets go!" You and Saur run out. "Wait! You forgot your Pokedex!" Yelled Prof. Oak. You and Saur blush and run back to get your pokedex. Oak also gives you 5 pokeballs. "Catch pokemon with the pokeballs and fill up your pokedex! Red and Green have pokedexes as well and they will be your rivals on this quest." You nod. You walk out of Oaks lab. "Come on Saur. Lets go catch some pokemon! Then we'll challenge the 1 gym leader and get a badge that'll make ya stronger." "Bulba!" Saur said and you both run to Viridan forest. After 2 days spent catching and battling you have Saur lv12 Bee lv6 Spear lv7 Pika lv9 and Pidge lv11. "Awesome! Ive got a Bulbasaur Weedle Spearow Pikachu and a Pidgey already! I bet im way ahead Red and Green!" You decide its time to challenge the 1 gym leader Brock. You walk to Pewter city and after healing up your pokemon back to full hp you go into the gym and head towards the end of the hallway to fight Brock, the gym leader. Then this huge guy stops you when youre almost there and says. "Hold up! Youre lightyears away from beating Brock!" He battles you using Diglett and Sandshrew but a little VineWhip sent them packing! "Aww man!" He complains. "Lightyears are a measure of distance, not time! Go on through." You keep walking untill you see Brock. He said. "I like to focus on rockhard defense to battle. What kindof strategy do you use? Go Geodude!" "Go Vine! Lets show him what weve got!" You yell. "Geodude RockThrow!" Brock commands his Geodude. But its not very good against Grass pokemon and does only 5 damage. "Saur,VineWhip!" It was super strong against Geodude and knocked him out. "Grr!! Go Onix!" He sent out hi super powerful Rocksnake pokemon. "Bide! Now after 2 turns the damage you do to Onix is multiplied by 2 and dealt to you instead!" "But if we do it in 1 turn Bide is useless!" You yell. "VineWhip!" And with 1 hit you KO 1 of the strongest pokemon in existence. Brock laughed. "Well done! You now get the BoulderBadge. It makes all your pokemon have higher attack power. Now go throgh mt. Moon into the ext city and challenge Misty!"
