Kress is the director of the National Audubon Society's Seabird Restoration Program and an instructor at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. He is the editor of Bird Gardens and the author of The Audubon Society Bird Gardens and The Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds. He lives in Ithaca, New York.
