Overview

Breast cancer survivor Patty Gelman recounts her journey through "Cancer World" in a series of anecdotes, chronicling her year-long struggle with the disease in an upbeat, colloquial, and often candidly funny way. Typical of her unyieldingly positive attitude is the way that Gelman breaks the news to her mother, also a cancer survivor: "'Well, it's my turn now!'"

Instead of keeping a journal during her treatment, Gelman preferred to share her experiences online, a choice she found surprisingly therapeutic. What started as periodic e-mails to family and friends soon developed into a book many cancer patients are turning to for hope. E-mails also served as an outlet and a built-in support group when her mother contracted lung cancer and passed on within the year. Gelman's story becomes larger than her disease, exploring the task of coping with the unexpected, and the value of family.

Great account of this process of getting well again.

I enjoyed the book and read in one sitting. I think it would have been helpful for someone such as myself, going through treatment, for her to add more information after she resumed normal life, did she go back to work and how was her health subsequent. There is very little information anywhere about recommended nutrional going forward - without going to a specialist and spending more money.

I would recommend to anyone going through cancer for a good reference and because of it, I set up a website for my journey through Caring Bridge and within one week I have 180 hits and 30 written comments.

    INTERESTING AND FUNNY

The idea for this book came from all the funny, interesting and informative emails Patty wrote us. I'm so glad she listened to Roswell Park and not her husband in deciding to write this book. Buy it - you will LOVE it!

    The healing power of humor

I wish I had received this book when I went through my own breast cancer treatment. Patty's positive outlook and ability to find the humor at difficult moments in her life are very rare qualities. She inspires me! This is a good book to share with someone else going through breast cancer treatment.

Humor After the Tumor is a beautifully written, funny, moving book.

I thoroughly enjoyed Patty Gelman's book. She writes with elegance and grace about a very difficult time in her life. Her humor adds a special dimension to her experience with cancer. This is a wonderfully informative book for anyone who has been recently diagnosed with cancer, on the road to recovery, or has gone through the entire treatment process. It is also a helpful book for friends and family members of anyone diagnosed with cancer.

    Could not put it down!!

As a person who does not normally do a lot of reading, this book was very difficult for me to put down. I felt like a fly on the walls of the Gelman home during this chapter in their lives. I was taken by the very true and quite personal account of life with Cancer. I feel as though I went through the whole experience with Patty and her family. I recommend this is a must read for anyone who is or could be touched by any type of Cancer.
