Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Deep down in the ocean, loud noises begin and last for twenty minutes or more. Then they repeat over and over again for hours. These are the magical songs of the humpback whale, also known as "the singer." Every kind of whale makes sounds but scientists have never recorded other whales moaning, grunting, squealing or roaring as prolifically as the humpback. The animal kingdom is full of surprises and this book presents them in a fun and factual way. Part of the "Animal Loudmouths" series, other noisy animal titles include coyotes, hippos, howler monkeys, hyenas and mockingbirds. Each animal's story is told in accurate and informative language. Using large, full color photos and grade appropriate text for emerging readers, the series is an excellent introduction to nonfiction reading. Learn where humpbacks live, what they eat and how they communicate. Additional features include a table of contents, habitat maps, fact boxes, picture glossary, index, additional reading resources as well as online resources available through the publisher's website. A "Sound Check" found in the book describes what scientists have learned about this giant underwater noisemaker. Since humpback whales spend most of their time underwater, they are very hard to observe. However, scientists have discovered some very interesting behavior. One discovery is that all males in the same area sing the same song. Another finding is that the songs of whales in different parts of the world are different from one another. This is an excellent resource for classroom use or student research projects. It is quite possible readers of all ages will be introduced to a new fact or two regarding this giant underwater noisemaker. A book and series worth checking out. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid
