    excellent book

this book is very good at describing grammer and itgives good examples. Howeve, I would not try to learn hungarian grammer before learning a few hundred words!! This way you do not get frusterated and understand more of why the sentence is formed the way it is.

    rather technical but detailed

I agree with a previous reviewer that this book is best used after you have done some good basic material already such as Assimil's 'Hungarian with ease'. Hungarian is one of those language where you need to know a fair bit of the language before you can start using grammar guides, so I don't think Round's book will be of much use either for a beginner. I honestly do not believe that you can master Hungarian by studying grammar, it is better if you learn basic grammar from a textbook such as Assimil and spend your time afterwards just reading as much as possible, learning more grammar by experience and exposure. The grammar is just too difficult to grasp by sheer intensive grammar study. Also, Hungarians will understand you if you know enough words and only know basic grammar. The coverage is quite good - it is detailed with many examples - and it is easy to look things up in it. The book is also easy to bring with you wherever you go. The levels covered are Basic + Intermediate. However it does not mention the socially "special" expressions used, it focuses purely on the academic usage rather than colloquial. The only negative thing about the book is that the explanations are very technical as he uses terms from Linguistics. However you should understand what he means just by looking at the examples, so you need to have good deductive abilities to use this book. The concepts in this book are not as clearly explained as in Round's grammar book 'Hungarian: An Essential Grammar', however Round's book usually costs twice as much as Törkenczy's book, and the latter only requires a little bit of extra brain-work so I think Törkenczy is overall a better option.

not for beginners, not for non-linguists

If you are a beginner and non-linguist: stay away from this book! The book claims to be practical and assures complete understanding and mastery, but it manages to only confuse the beginner with its linguistic jargon, making it a useless product for its intended consumer group. Hungarian grammar is notoriously hard to grasp, and I would recommend Round's book Hungarian: an essential grammar, to anyone wanting to learn more about Hungarian grammar.
