Leinwand bases his presentation of the problem of hunger in the midst of affluence on numerous reports and studies, carefully documenting his data and liberally quoting his sources. Moving from a look at the recent history of hunger in America into a discussion of the irony and paradoxes of the situation, Leinwand differentiates between hunger, malnutrition and famine. He outlines the various causes of hunger, ranging from unemployment to anorexia, and its special impact on the young and elderly. The American diet and governmental dietary goals are discussed, as well as government and private assistance programs such as food stamps and church soup kitchens. A final chapter presents differing views on world hunger and suggests general solutions to the overall problem. A table of essential nutrients is appended. Leinwand writes concisely but includes a wealth of supportive data, making this an excellent source for student research. Black - and - white photographs enhance and humanize the text, as do brief case histories at the beginning of each chapter. Those needing material on hunger with a worldwide scope are referred to Jules Archer's Hunger on Planet Earth (Crowell, 1977) and Laurence Pringle's Our Hungry Earth: the World Food Crisis (Macmillan, 1976).
