Lloyd Banks' being a member of the G-Unit posse, click, crew, whatever, means that the release of his debut is a huge event with a massive storm cloud of positive and negative hype looming above. Mixtapes had boasted it's the second coming, message boards had already declared it a disaster, but when you get down to it, all you're left with is a CD to throw in the player -- a 120-mm-diameter disc of polycarbonate that's either going to have you bobbing your head to the beat or wondering what else you should have bought. Decide whether you can tolerate, ignore, or devour all the usual G-Unit boasts, brags, and threats, and know that The Hunger for More is another solid release from the crew and is a couple steps down from 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' and a step above G-Unit's Beg for Mercy. Know too that there's no "In da Club" here. Banks goes more for the long lyrical flows compared to 50's penchant for catchy chants, but there's no filler and there's about four or five tracks to add to the crew's hall of fame. With its marching-band snare and frantic loop, "Playboy" is the first contender, and one of the tracks that breaks away from the usual G-Unit thuggish funk. The stately "Warrior" is struck from the mold -- as are the great "I'm So Fly" and "On Fire" -- but it's all part of the album's great bouncing-between-the-two structure and perhaps executive producer 50 Cent's plan. To his credit, 50's given Banks plenty of room to explain himself; you could trim about three minutes of G-Unit propaganda and still have an album. Anyone questioning Banks' lyrical skills only needs to check his vivid picture of life on the streets, "Til the End." The frank narrative turns chilling as the rapper observes that crack addicts are part of picture -- easy to dismiss losers when they're strangers but devastating when it's your family. There are many more moments that are striking enough to rise above the hype and drama, and even guest stars Snoop Dogg and Eminem end up just passers through in Banks' world. To define yourself as a complex individual in the G-Unit clan is a difficult task, but here's a rapper who can do it. The Hunger for More starts with the sound of a money counter flipping -- a perfectly G-Unit opening -- but in the end it's totally Banks. 50 Cent seems comfortable with this, but maybe even he missed some of the irony in the album's title. [The Hunger for More was also released in a limited "G-Unit Collector's Edition" that includes a DVD with the animated "My Buddy" video and is packaged in money paper.]
Vibe
1/2 Hunger begins with the hard-charging bass line and stadium-crowd atmosphere of "Playboy," which serves as a thrilling backdrop for Banks's cunning wordplay. Rondell Conway

    Good But Not Great

Lloyd Banks is a good rapper, but he's in the shadow of tough competition. Unlike Obie, who brought very different flavor with his debut, Banks mainly sticks to the regular G-Unit sound(money, power, respect, bragging). The tracks where Banks collaborates with only one other person work well, but when he adds too many guests, he gets outdone. "Warrior Pt. 2" should've been on another album, and "I Get High" is just filler, with a boring chorus by 50 Cent and an as always annoying verse from Snoop Dogg. But the good songs stand out on this album. "Work Magic(ft. Young Buck", "When The Chips Are Down"(ft. Game), and "Til The End(ft. Nate Dogg), all work well. "Ain't No Click" isn't as good, but it is still a standout because of Yayo and Banks' chemistry. "Southside Story" is storytelling that almost rivals Biggie's "Gimme The Loot". "I'm So Fly" is a good solo song on which basically Banks flaunts about himself. The singles(On Fire, Warrior) are good songs, and "Karma" is a possible third single. Main point, Banks has potential, but just download this.

    The best album of 2004

Lloyd Banks is the best black rapper alive (followed closely by 50 Cent) and the 2nd best rapper alive (after Eminem). Every song on this album is a hit. Both Warrior and Warrior Pt. 2 are so well written it put a tear in my eye.

    great starter

This cd, in my opinion, didnt live up to the hype...still a great album though the songs with the fellow g unit members or the fab 5 as banks calls them are the album the rest are just fillers....the limited edition version with the DVD is really the reason to buy it the animated video for "my buddy" is better than most videos played on bet the day in the life of banks and buck arent that special but still worth it...im a little disappointed witht he video for smile cause its edited and why not have the video for "on fire" sice its already out....some final word on this album, the hype killed it I was expecting alot more from the album so i was a little disappointed but but banks' constant punch lines will have u rewinding to catch the witty lines he says...one things for sure if theres any albums worth buying an not bootlegging its a g unit album an im patiently waiting for the yayo, game, and buck albums.

    Lloyd Banks Is "On Fire"

It's a fact that this will be one of the HOTTEST hiphop albums to hit! Lloyd Banks is feeding the streets by bringing strong punch lines and street banging beats in his long awaited debut album. This album is sure to be a classic! Go buy it!

    Lloyd Banks

I bought the hunger for more cd on the 6/29. And Lloyd Banks represent G-Unit to the fullest. He showed what he can do by him being on most of the track by himself. From the start to end he represent. I wouldn't be suprise if it goes to the top of the chart soon. I recommend this cd to anyone cause it has something for everyone.
