After three months, they still have no contact with the outside world, more dangerous mutant animals are cropping up and food supplies are becoming perilously scarce. Even as Caine starts to recover from the confrontation with the town leader (and half-brother) Sam, the evil gaiaphage exerts its influence, manipulating Caine and others in a plan to gain more power. The ongoing divide between kids who have developed powers and ones who haven't also threatens to lead to violence. Grant throws everything at the children, from gory deaths every bit as nasty as in mainstream horror to sexual tension, eating disorders and drug use. The large cast of characters-from a variety of racial and sexual backgrounds-might be hard for some to keep track of, but readers looking for intense, nearly nonstop action and emotional drama will find lots to enjoy, even as the climactic ending sets up another sequel. It is three months after everyone fifteen or older has vanished, and youth in the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone) are barely surviving. Food is extremely scarce, and the young people are reduced to eating random canned goods, garbage, and at least one neighborhood pet. Sam is beginning to cave under the pressure of being in charge, and it is only getting worse as the general population becomes more apathetic about working toward their own survival. Conflict between the norms (normal youth) and the moofs (mutant freaks) escalates until there is an attempted lynching. The mysterious Darkness, naming itself a gaiaphage, is growing stronger, and it is working on a plan toward ultimate dominance of the FAYZ, but it needs a fuel rod from the nuclear power plant to succeed. Unable to break his connection from the gaiaphage, Caine attempts to appease it by taking the power plant from Sam and his people, but can either boy claim a victory if the Darkness gets what it needs? Readers will be unable to avoid involuntarily gasping, shuddering, or flinching while reading this suspense-filled story. The tension starts in the first chapter and does not let up until the end. Some of the questions from Gone (HarperTeen, 2008/VOYA April 2008) are answered, but they leave new questions in their wake. The story is progressing with smart plot twists, both in actions and in emotions. Three months have passed since the events of Gone, and the children of the FAYZ are learning what it means to grow up fast. With no adults around to monitor their behavior, the few hundred children left after the disappearances ate all of the non-perishable food and left the rest to rot. Now left with little food, they must figure out how to produce food or face starvation. While hunger is an immediate threat, they must deal with a multitude of other problems, like how to take care of the many small children and run a safe new civilization without anybody over the age of thirteen. Many of the children are trying to cope with abilities (such as healing and super-speed), and more children are developing these strange abilities every day. If that is not enough, animals and insects are developing sinister mutations, and the threat of attack from a looming monster and disassembled groups of children is always present. In this second title in the "Gone" series, Grant will keep young adult readers enthralled right from the shocking first pages. The characters are not perfect—they make bad decisions and feel a wide range of human emotions—yet this makes them feel more real to the reader. The multitude of character perspectives would lend itself well to character analysis activities, in addition to keeping both boys and girls interested in the narration. This would work well as a bridge book or a supplement to Lord of the Flies, though it likely has too many elements of horror to be used as a full-class text. Reviewer: Traci Avalos

As their numbers diminish, the kids of the FAYZ struggle to survive. Food is strictly rationed. Killer worms haunt fruit and vegetable fields. Sam, the 15-year-old mayor of Perdido Beach, has to settle petty disputes among the trapped FAYZ residents. When more kids develop superpowers, Perdido Beach's population begins to split into Team Mutant and Team Normal. Sam, however, has bigger problems than the town's splintering. His evil twin brother, Caine, has awakened after three months of delirium, and Caine has big plans to destroy Sam's town. The breathtaking pace, thrilling action and gruesome monsters of Gone (2008) are back in a big way. Unfortunately, so are the stilted dialogue, the frustration that comes from the author writing much and saying very little and blatant sexism. In one passage, Sam "is struck by" how "good" an 81-pound anorexic girl looks. Sam's beautiful genius girlfriend, Astrid, only once thinks a negative thought about having to care for her autistic five-year-old brother. Michael Grant is the New York Times bestselling author of the Gone series. He has spent much of his life on the move. Raised in a military family, he attended ten schools in five states, as well as three schools in France. Hunger

All the adults are gone along with everyone over the age of fifteen. Chaos has begun. Kids are dying, starving, and suffering from there own stupidity. Here in the FAYZ Sam is the only "adult", the only parent to a bunch of ungrateful, ignorant children, children who would rather fight over who stole whos candy bar than survive. Sam can't keep pretending everything is okay, and he can't stand being expected to have all the answers. Along with the pressures of trying to survive in a world doomed to perish, Sam must also deal with the fact that some of the kids are developing powers, becoming mutants that can cook you from the inside out and defy gravity. Perdido Beach is dividing into freaks and normals.
Hunger is something new and exciting that not only captures what life in the FAYZ is like, but also enters the mind of an adolescent, because it doesn't matter if you've been confined in a giant bubble for months, or not, you're still just a teenager. Short, choppy sentences give Hunger suspense and a sense of actuality that will keep you awake and entertained as it captures the insecurity and temptation that comes with being a teenager. Each and every character has a story to tell, from a love interest to a creepy voice inside their head telling them to do horrible things.
Grant's novel is unbelievably graphic, from the way he writes of young children murdering one another to stories of excruciating pain and torture. Michael Grant has yet again written a page turner I would recommend for anyone with a strong stomach looking for a little romance and a lot of action. He has created an even more horrific Gone.

Hunger is a good read

HUNGER doesn't shy away from venturing into pretty disturbing territory, starting right in the first chapter. One of Drake's plans halfway through the book is particularly vile. This is a YA book, but it never feels like the material is watered down. Sam exploits an alcoholic kid to get him to work, and a lesbian girl warns Sam that the divisions between "freaks" and "normals" are inevitable, based on her personal experience (kudos to Grant for tackling this subject). Enjoyed gone and waited for this book to come out. it was great to see how sam is struggling with the responsibility of being in charge. It made him seem more human. That's one thing that makes this book so interesting. Grant makes his characters more real, not just static characters that have superpowers. There is depth to them. Not only are they kids struggling against each other and this barrier that has trapped them, but they also are struggling within themselves. Not that the idea of these kids stranded inside the fayz isn't interesting, but making the characters more real adds to the interest.

I read the first book and it was just amazing. It was one of those books where you hate to see it end. You end up begging for more and here it is! I've been looking for a sequel forever. Yay!

Hunger for this book

I loved this book. I accidently picked up the first one at my friends house, when I realized my mistake. It was too late. I was hooked. Sam Temple is a young teen age boy is thrown from being a carefree, surfer teen into being an responsible adult in only a second. You will laugh, cry, and cheer for the characters with every page that you turn. In this book Sam's growing continues. Mr. Grant does a great job with adding the peer pressure, lust, and self insecurity that comes with being a teenager into every character. I highly recommend this book if you love adventure, suspence, romance, and the legendary fight between good and evil. I personally can't wait till Mr. Grant pops out another fantastic book, and neither should you.

A MUST READ!!!

This book is awesome! Food is running out in the FAYZ and people will do anything for food. Meanwhile the Darkness is getting srtonger and Caine can't seem to get it out of his head. While Darkness uses Caine to help him grow stronger, new powrs are developing in more kids. Lana has the Darkness in her mind and wants in destroyed. Kids are starting a hate the mutant kids as food runs out and accidents occur. Then a murder happens when a mutant kills a regular kid and things get crazy. Mutants are being hunted for justice and people are ganging up. Sam is struggling through the whole thing and trying to make good decisions for everbody but he's cracking. Astrid is worried about Little Pete who is also been in contact with the Darkness. Someone has to kill the Darkness and restore peace in the FAYZ, who's going to do it? Who's going to win?

Wow

After i read thisbook, i dont feel like i will ever understand the true meaning of "hungry". When i whine mom im hungry...i think of this! Wow!

I literally am LIVING in this book. I went on a hike and thought,
"THIS HIKE WILL NOT HELP MY HUNGER.... SINCE WE ARE STARVING AND ALL"
It took me a minute to figure out that my mom was right next to me because she HASNT disapeared in FAYZ!!
This book will have you hooked...just as the Darkness has all of its victims hooked! I am living in the book just as the darkness is living within the mutants!!

And The Greatness Continued!

After reading Gone, you wonder, "What happens to the kids in the FAYZ next?" Well Hunger most definitely answers that unavoidable question! It was another great book written by the one and only Michael Grant. The development of the gaiaphage, the ugly cruelty of that psycho Drake Merwin, the victories of Sam Temple all continue on in Hunger. The book was practically glued to my hands! It was difficult, if not impossible, to put the book down! I would recommend this book to anyone. So if you haven't read Gone, read that first and then continue on to Hunger as the story continues!!! Enjoy the book!

Crazy!

This book is extraordinary! I would certainly, without a doubt recommend this to anyone over the age of thirteen, in fact I have recommended it! Like the first, it is crazy and will leave you speachless. My stomach knots just thinking about it. I believe my worst fear is that something like this would happen to me! Never again will I say that I am hungry or starving. This is not a book that you will EVER forget!

Excellent Read!!

I really enjoyed this book. I read the first book when it first came out and got hooked on it then when Hunger finally came out I bought the book and couldn't put it down. Hunger did a really good job taking in where the second left off. Knowing that eventually their would be food problems and most of all problems with drake and his crew. I really like that they had so many minor problems all surround this big problem of the "hunger in the dark". Through the book they started finding ways to solve the problems like fishing and making "Burtos" for currency.
Next I really like the characters and all their different powers. I like how the author had put another person into the story at different times. Like duck for instance, he was put into the story when you'd least expect it and the fact that it was a normal kid that whom gained powers on accident or how some of the kids came into play at the least expected times.
The author also did a good job with keeping the story interesting the whole time, there was never a minute that sam didn't have to worry about something or another kid was finding a power. I really liked that and this is why I couldn't put the book down because it was all so good!
I would really recommend this book to anyone who likes action! It is a really good read.

Completely What I wanted

When I found out that Hunger was in bookstores I begged my father to drive me to the bookstore right away. It totally showed me how even though we all think we can be independent we really aren't.With all the new developments in the story it is pure action!

great read, bit graphic

i must be some kind of delicate flower and never knew it because as reading this series i have a hard time sticking with it because the story gets too intense and disturbing for me to keep reading it. to me this is a teen,tween reading material and some of the occurances in the story seem a little to graphic for young adults. all the others i have talked to dont feel the say way. for the most part and overall i love the books its a source for kids to read about certain global issues that are going on today, and for them to see it on a level close to thier own. its great for adults too, i am an adult and i love the books. cant wait for the next two.

This book is beautifully written! i loved the edgy feelings that you feel in the book,if you love to Read,then you have to read this series,i really hope that Grant makes a third book!

Hungry for more.

Hunger was an amazing sequel to Gone. Hunger is much darker but still quite realistic. Kids are in a really tight situation. Food is running out, and this what makes realistic is not like "Hey we are going to party every night and have everlasting amounts of food." Ha no way, jose. I loved to see Caine's soft side and love for Diana. It was quite touching.
Recomend this to anyone.

A Dark Thrill Ride

The Gone series is the type of series that has you marking down your calendars waiting for the next installment. Both Hunger, and its prequel, Gone were gripping and fantastic. Hunger, while darker than its prequel, really dove into deeper topics. The cast of the series is diverse in its variety, and you are free to pick your favorites. The dialogue, while nothing fantastic, is realistic and easy. Same as the writing. Yes, the writing has some grammatical mistakes and is far from lyrical, but it serves its purpose. Great book that I recommend to all.
