Hunger Moon kept great pace and had my emotions up, down and back again. There were shocking twists and turns that rounded out the story quite nicely. Ms. Snark keeps killing characters! My mouth dropped open more than once and even now, I'm curious as to where this goes. When you think you know, guess what, you don't! New characters are introduced and this world takes on more shape.

I enjoyed this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put it down, which was unfortunate because it was not a short book and it interfered with other responsibilities. It was a complex and unexpected plot, but as it ended I felt bereft. I felt as if I was just getting to know these characters - and then they were gone. I will not spoil this story by saying too much, but I would have preferred if it had ended differently. I still have so many questions about what comes next. I guess that's how the author ensures a readership for future installments. I will definitely be looking for more to read from this Melissa Stark.

Valkyrie Victoria Storm is a female Alpha, the leader of her pack, a young werewolf that refuses to give in. In her own words, “Submitting frightened her more than death” ... Or so we're led to believe. As her story becomes more intense and page-turning with every moment, above all things, Victory learns what it means to be a good mate, a great Alpha, and a caring person who deals with the real world. As her character develops, you get a glimpse of the Valkyrie, an image of the wolf, and the ture nature of the human within her. Melissa Snarl crafts a beautiful, chilling tale of Norse gods, werewolves, ghosts, vengence, and above everything else, love and loyalty. Victory struggles with obedence, yet is good at it. Arik struggles with loving again, yet would do anything for his son and his new mate. Logan tries desperately to come to terms with himself, hardly believing he could be loved or innocent. The three create a dynamic trio, as their paths cross multiple times. Can Victory hold out long enough to save her pack, or will her efforts fail? Will Arik be able to love again, or will his isolation be Victory's downfall and his own? Can Logan accept he didn't murder his mother or will he die a disgraceful death? Read the book to find out!

I read a wide range of genres and am always interested in reading something different. I have never read a book of this kind. Fantasy stories are seldom on my radar. I was ambivalent when I began reading Melissa Snark’s Hunger Moon. Very happily, I discovered the book to be an interesting read and a thought provoking story. I enjoy mysteries and always attempt to guess where the author is going. Snark kept me guessing wrong. Underneath this multi-leveled fantasy, we find a young, beautiful werewolf, Victoria Storm. ‘Vic’ is locked in conflict not only with hunters seeking the destruction of her pack and an evil witch threatening her goddess arranged mate, and the life of his son, but also with her own need to find an alpha to help her lead her pack. Snark keeps throwing effective roadblocks in front of Victoria, the brother of a dead lover; her own mysterious goddess; a strange librarian; Lori, the ghost of her potential mate’s wife; and most important Logan, the son of Arik, her prospective life mate. Not being at all versed in this type of fantasy, I found all the unique attributes of the werewolf world intriguing. Victoria’s travels to Valhalla and her Nordic connection added yet another layer of fabric interwoven into her complex world. The final battle in the story (the outcome of which I would never give away) has just enough of a twist to bring everything together in an entertaining finale. Snark certainly left me wanting to read more. Throughout the book, I felt like Logan and Victoria were siblings more than anything else. I can remember vicious fights with my own sibling when we were younger. We’d often wait for TV commercials to come on before jumping at each other’s throats and stop immediately when the program began again. Of course, we became best of friends later in life. I wonder how Snark will develop Logan and Victoria’s relationship in the next book, I hope she writes. Will the pair build a warm relationship or will they always be at war? Though this story boils to to a young woman seeking a husband, the fact that it is couched in the mythical world of werewolves makes it so far above an adolescent romance that it is an enjoyable and interesting read for anyone with a willingness to have their belief in the ‘real’ world tested.

This is the first full length novel in the Victoria Storm series by Melissa Snark. I received this book and it's prequel, The Child Thief, from the author in exchange for an honest review. The first story, The Child Thief is very short, just a little over 26 pages long. It was a nice introduction to Victoria, but really not necessary for the story line of the novel. The story opens with Victoria in a fight with Sawyer, the brother of her former lover, Daniel. He is the remaining child of Jake Barrett, a Hunter, who has suddenly turned on Victoria's pack. The Barrett's hold Victoria and her pack responsible for Daniel's death. Most of Victoria's pack is gone, including her parents, leaving Victoria to lead and protect the pack. Victoria is also a Valkyrie in service to Freya. As Freya's priestess, she speaks with her goddess and even can travel to Asgard, since she escorts the souls of slain warriors to Valhalla via the Bifrost. Victoria ends up saving the life of Sawyer, because the ghost of Daniel requests it of her. This confuses Sawyer and he takes off.  Freya sends Victoria and her pack to California in search of a mate to strengthen the pack. When Victoria gets to Sierra Pines, she finds that the Alpha she is in search of, has only 1 member in his pack, his son. The Alpha, Arik Koenig, turns out to be an attorney and brother-in-law to the local sheriff. Victoria likes the look of the Alpha, but there are issues to be addressed and worked out. Including the belief that Arik's son, Logan could be a feared berserker and killed his own mother during his first change.  This was an interesting take on Viking mythology. The werewolves are descendants of Fenrir and stay close to the Norse traditions and beliefs. There were a couple of spots that dragged a little, mainly due to more background information being given, but otherwise it was a very interesting read. I really liked that the author wasn't afraid to remove characters and took some very daring chances with her characters. I am looking forward to the sequel to see where the story line is headed. I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads.

A series you won’t want to miss! 101k and I wanted to keep reading! Victoria comes from a long, royal line of werewolves, but that means nothing in her new desperate situation. She is now the Alpha, struggling to protect the few pack members she has left. Hunters are attacking her at every turn, pack members are dying, and being on the run makes it hard to provide even food for her pack and the new litter on the way. A message from her goddess just might be the answer. She is sent to find a strong male Alpha in a small town in California. This is the point where me, the chronic romantic starts screaming and hollering, “Hell yeah!” The man she finds is all the goddess described and more. He can offer food, security, safety… There are just two problems. 1. He has a son who she doesn’t see eye to eye with, and 2. Her new Alpha has a secret and a past that just may be her and her packs undoing unless she can figure out the truth. Was she sent there for help or was she sent there to help him?  This exciting journey had me laughing, crying, cheering, and holding my breath. Everything a great story should. Victoria is the indomitable hero, a short, beautiful Alpha female put in the worst of situations, trying to hold her pack together while everything is falling apart. She is a fighter, a warrior, and she never gives up, and I cannot wait to read more in this series. What an amazing adventure. I highly recommend this series! Don't forget to check out The Child Thief, the intro to the series and the first Victoria Storm novella.
