Children's Literature - Phyllis J. Perry
Sharks are described as wolves of the sea since they hunt in packs. This nonfiction book begins by describing the world of long ago when there were dinosaurs on land, winged reptiles, and unusual plants. It moves on to discuss the strange creatures, including sharks, which lived in the seas. Moving to the present time, it tells about a few of the more than three hundred kinds of sharks. Some of these are discussed in detail including the whale shark and the dwarf shark. Part of the "Step into Reading" program, this book on sharks is aimed at young readers in grades one through three who are now reading on their own. Most pages have twenty to forty words with simple colored drawings. Young readers will learn about sharks' bodies, their teeth, food and eating habits, and shark babies, as well as, the slight danger they pose to humans. Reviewer: Phyllis J. Perry
