Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It is 1787. The American Revolution has ended and the colonists have won their fight for liberation. The question remains¾what is to become of those who maintained loyalty to the British government during the conflict? The answer¾resettlement in Canada. And so the O'Carr family leaves their comfortable Albany, New York home for the unknown Canadian frontier. The move is especially difficult for twelve-year-old Kate. Since her mother's death several years earlier, her father has relied on Kate to manage all of the household tasks and to mind her younger twin brothers as well. Doing all this was hard enough in their Albany home; Kate can't imagine what it will be like when they have a makeshift shelter, an ever-dwindling supply of food, and miles between themselves and the nearest family. Then, their father fails to return from a hunting trip one day. How will the children survive? Who can help them? Crook has written an engaging tale of frontier adventure, including many of the same themes as historical American tales, with the added twist of the Canadian setting. 2001, Stoddart Kids, $7.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Heidi Green
School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-A fast-paced adventure set in the Canadian wilderness in 1787. Kate and her family have left their farm outside Albany, NY, to settle near Lake Ontario. The deaths of her mother and her grandmother have left the 12-year-old to do most of the chores and care for her four-year-old brothers. During the long, harsh winter, Kate's father is often away from the family's makeshift cabin to hunt for food. When he doesn't return from an excursion, Kate is forced to fend for herself and her siblings. The story flows swiftly, as the children encounter bears and wolves and struggle to survive. The tale is reminiscent of the "Little House" books (HarperCollins) and will hook readers with its life-on-the-frontier theme. While Kate is a strong, resourceful heroine, she is shown to have realistic doubts and worries. The conclusion is satisfying and will leave readers asking for another installment of her adventures.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
