Four young heroes, chosen to save Erdas from the rising threat of the Devourer, find themselves torn between their quest and the needs of the ones they love. In between their expeditions to obtain the Great Beasts' talismans, Conor, Meilin, Abeke and Rollan face an equally difficult task: learning to bond with their spirit animals. Each must confront his or her weaknesses in order to understand the spirit animals' strengths. Conor, normally timid, must rely on Briggan the Wolf to learn to lead. Meilin, a trained warrior, must yield to the peaceful patience of her giant panda, Jhi. However, Rollan and Essix the Falcon's discernment and Abeke and her leopard Uraza's courage allow the four to retrieve the talisman of Rumfuss the Boar. Stiefvater brings to this multiply authored, multiplatform series her ability to create complex, sympathetic characters, enhancing the plot-heavy narrative she inherited (Wild Born, by Brandon Mull, 2013). Characters grapple with conflicting motives, familial responsibilities and the consequences of their choices. This increasing depth moves the story from a straightforward adventure fantasy to an insightful look at what it means to be a hero, with the glory it brings and the sacrifice it demands. The accompanying game offers an exciting off-page experience. Fantastical adventure is enhanced by complex characters. (Fantasy. 8-12)
Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
Zerif, The Jackal, is interfering in the traditional process of identifying young people who can summon spirit animals. Thus, the young heroes of Erdas have no time to lose in mastering the skills they need to defend their land against the Conquerers. Book two of the "Spirit Animals" series opens with the four children who had summoned the Great Beasts: Conor, Rollan, Meilin, and Abeke. Called the Four Fallen, they do not trust each other enough to work as a team, nor are they secure in their bonds with their spirit animals. These challenges put the future of their world at risk, even as they set out on a journey that will pit them against dark forces determined to claim power for themselves. Stiefvater deftly develops each character through encounters with wise mentors and cunning, dangerous opponents. These encounters, in turn, shed more light on the scope and complexity of the planned seven-book series. Realistic, heart-pounding conflicts take on new levels of significance as the Four Fallen are forced to rely on themselves, and each other, instead of the adults around them. Along the way, the Four Fallen find aid in unlikely places and discover their unique roles and strengths. But their loyalties are divided as they are forced to choose between their own families and their allegiance to the Greencloaks. "Spirit Animals" is a multiplatform series with each book penned by a different best-selling author or duo. An online game allows readers to select their own spirit animals and embark on quests. Video interviews with the authors and teaching support aligned with the Common Core build a bridge to classroom discussion. Fantasy fans will be thrilled that Scholastic has expanded its interactive approach to publishing beyond "The 39 Clues" and "Infinity Ring" series, but the book is strong enough to capture interest without the addition of technology. I am presuming that if you are reading this review, you have already read the first Spirit Animals book (Spirit Animals- Wild Born), and have decided or are deciding to continue on with it or not. If you have not read the first book already, I must offer you a word of caution, because there will be spoilers for it in this review. If you have already read the first book, there's no need to worry, because this review is completely, totally, and in every way Book Two spoiler free. Review from a 5th grader: Favorite Character: Abeke Least Favorite Character: Rollan Favorite Spirit Animal: Uraza Rating: 5/5 Stars  For those of you that have read the book, I think that Book 2 is much funnier than the first. Don't worry I also think that this one is easier to understand. It is equally surprising compared to  the first. I  also think that adding a website to the book is genius. That is why I think this book is worth 5/5 stars. Review from an 11th grader: Favorite Character: Conor Least Favorite Character: Devin Favorite Spirit Animal: Briggan Rating: 4.5/5 Stars This book builds on the wonderful foundation that the first book set up for us. Book Two is another adventure into this huge world of fantasy we have just began to enter. In many ways it is similar to the first book, minus the first four chapters of introduction. The characters do develop a bit as the story goes on, but for the most part no major changes in them occur. While slightly lacking in character development, this book is mainly meant to continue laying down the foundation for what appears will be a very long, memorable series. Book Two was fun, but I have a feeling that it was mainly meant to lead us to the next part of the series, where the main plot will pick up more speed.  As you can see, I am (just a little) out of the age range for this story, but I still enjoyed it as a quick, fun dip into a large fantasy world that I think has a lot of potential. I will be sticking with this series to see how it turns out in the long run. (On a side note, just a few months ago I read a young adult book by Maggie Stiefvater called the Scorpio Races. I enjoyed it a lot, and was shocked to see that she was writing the second Spirit Animals book! If you are a bit too old for Spirit Animals, I highly suggest you give some of Maggie's other works a try.) (We were lucky enough to find a copy of Book Two, Hunted, for sale last week, before it was released. It was literally the last copy on the shelf.)

Spirit Animals is the third multi-author interactive series from Scholastic (39 Clues and Infinity Ring are the others). The 39 Clues remains very popular with middle-graders, and Scholastic is hoping to repeat that success with Spirit Animals. My fifth graders really enjoyed Book 1: Wild Born by Brandon Mull and I think they will like this installment even more. This title is adventurous action from page one. The overly-complex narrative that marred the first half of book one is absent in Hunted and Stiefvater really just follows the characters from one fever-pitched encounter to another. Still, these books lack depth. There's not much character development or world-building. I think this is by design, though. The decision to make these books thin makes them more accessible (and fun!) to emerging middle-grade readers, and makes it easier for the multi-author approach to work. Warning: Some YA readers will try out individual titles thanks to the well-loved authors of each book - Brandon Mull, Maggie Stiefvater, and Garth Nix are books 1-3. However, one must remember that these authors are writing in a very specific construct so the books are more an exploration of plot and character, than an expose of author style. You have been warned. I'm excited about Book 3 - Blood Ties because Garth Nix is the author and I love him. Maybe he'll be able to take the series a bit deeper. Or maybe I should listen to my own warning!

My 10 yr old daughter loves this book/series. She can't wait for the next book! She likes the high adventure and the scholastic online game that goes along with the book too. I love it cause she is reading something different then what she typically reads so this exposes her to a different genre... She even gave books 1 and 2 as birthday gifts to a friend!

This is an amazingly great book, its premise is great and the plot is sound. I have only one problem with the book, the writting is different than brandon mulls other books. Then I relised that this wasn't written by Brandon mull, its a great book but I can say this for all the brandon fans out there, write more books Brandon!

In book 1, four kids have come of age and are allowed to drink from the Nectar of Ninani and see if they get a Spirit Animal. Conor, Meilin, Abeke, and Rollan each summon one of the Four Fallen Great Beasts. In Book 2, Abeke has joined the Greencloaks (the good-guys), but is still untrusted by Meilin, Conor, and Rollan. With good reason, of course – she did, at first, fight for the enemy (the Conquerors). When they hear word of Rumfuss the Boar (a Great Beast) and his talisman (an object that could turn the tides for the Greencloaks against the Conquerors, or vice versa) being up north, the four kids and the Four Great Beasts (their spirit animals; Abeke’s, Uraza the Leopard; Meilin’s, Jhi the Panda; Conor’s, Briggan the Wolf; and Rollan’s, Essix the Falcon), along with teacher Tarik and guide Finn, plan to find Rumfuss and get the talisman peacefully. But there is a twist. There are some new enemies abroad… This is a great second book to this series. Ms. Stiefvater really did this book very well. I like her writing style so much that I hunted (no pun intended) down her other books! :) Sadly she is mostly a YA author and my parents think the books are a bit too old for me, but I am adding her books to my list of books I want to read when I am older! I love how Ms. Stiefvater goes into depth about what Jhi’s and Essix’s powers are and how they are used. That was very cool. I like how Ms. Stiefvater kept me on the edge of my seat with lots of action and a story that was interesting and fun. I couldn’t put the book down, literally, I read this book in one afternoon. :) The book also goes into depth about the Bile (A form of the Nectar of Ninani that gives the caller all of  the power) and what it does. I like Abeke. She is a great character. Conor’s cool too. Can’t wait for Book 3! *NOTE I got an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Although the author changed, this book is even better than the first. It seemed to be rushed towards the end, but overall, I thought this book was great. You feel like you are traveling actully with the four kids. You will meet new characters, travel to new places, and experience rush to find more talismans!

The spirit animal series is one of the best series you will read. I'm telling you right now. This book Hunted is when the 4 kids go on another quest to get a tailisman of the boar. The conquerors have perfected the bile and are making so called "leagends" they get to a castle and to crazy things to get the tailisman. They meet a guy named Finn. I would tell more but I wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone.
