Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Toni Jourdan
Elena Gilbert wakes to find herself back in her old room, her diary safely stowed under the floorboards of her closet. Life renewed, yet life as she had known it, ended. Damon was gone. Truly dead this time. Stefan's love for her, as undying as ever. Most things back to normal, thanks to the Guardians. Elena was human again and Fell's Church was no longer the Kitsune's war zone. Although, how normal could life be if a finger pricked by a rose's thorn could drip blood spelling out the name Celia, or when a scarf almost strangles Celia and then falls to spell out Meredith? What about the appearance of Caleb Smallwood? Is he as harmless as he would like them to believe? If only Damon were still alive. Elena had watched him die. So he had to be dead, right? Why then did the lake weeds spell out his name as the next victim. The friends have been through so much that their emotions are getting the better of them in more ways than one. To top it all off, Elena is the cause of all the strange happenings, and all she wants is for life to go back to normal so she can make college plans like all her friends. If only it were that easy. Stefan and Damon shared Elena's love but jealousies abound when the friends are forced to see the dark side of how they feel about each other. Sometimes a simple emotion can present itself as a horror unimaginable. First book in yet another series involving the bestselling Vampire Diaries characters. The Phantom was a bit of a watered down disappointment but the beloved characters of the series "live" on. Reviewer: Toni Jourdan

    I'll read it- theirs hope

I understand why alot of Vampire Diaries fans-myself included- are angry that L.J is no longer writing the books. Although, I don't know about you guys but i'm interested in how this story ends. I've read all the books from start to finish- i'm not going to stop now. And for the record I liked Phantom it was reminiscent of the original trilogy- almost realistic. I think that the ghostwriter is trying his/her best to live up to L.J'S name. Not reading the book isn't going to change anything that's happened L.J is not going to magically start writing the books again. Why punish someone that did what their employers told them? I respect everyone that decides to not read this, they have a right to an opinion, but so do I. I hope no ones offended. I've just been wanting to say this for a while. :) Happy reading everyone!

    I Also Recommend:

    New Writer :)

I am so excited that there will be someone different writing this book. To tell you the truth when she wrote the new triligoy I felt like it was a completely different person writing this. And really, it kind of is because she wrote it almost 20 years later. I couldnt even bring my self to read the last two books. It kept getting crazy. So here's to a new start.

    This book IS my LJS

Yes, this next series was taken from LJ Smith and given to a ghostwriter, but the first book, Phantom, IS written by LJ Smith, just not the second two. She says it on her website. So try reading it anyway.

But yeah, it's ridiculous what Alloy did to her.

Not Going to Read it-LJ got fired for trying to but want i want most in the book

Im not going to read it. Not only because they fired LJ Smith, but because of why they fired her. They fired her because she kept putting Damon and Elena moments in the rough draft. They didnt like that and she wouldnt take it out. And the Damon Elena moments ARE THE ONLY REASON I READ THOSE BOOKS!!!!!! So im not going to read them anymore. Ive now switched over to the Vampire Diaries TV show, where there is going to be a whole 3rd season full of Damon and Elena moments!

    thats messed up!!

seriously? really....come on now. how are they going to take something that lj smith wrote and try to now pass the new series off. really people? Do you honestly think that readers arent going to throw a fit? that would be like firing stephine meyer and trying to write new books to go along with series. even though its a worldwide masterpiece the fans read the books for a reason. the fans dont just fall in love with the books and the stories but they fall in love with the authors. fans like me that when i search for new books i search for authors. i dont google vampire diaries. i google lj smith. let me just say to the people who thought they could take her work away from you....your really f'ed up! you made a huge mistake and you will be hurting right where it hurts the most. financially!!! because the fans are going to bocott the new series and your not gonna make squat!! sure some people will prolly by the book just to see what happens. however, you will be losing millions. let us know how that works out for you okay?!

    Not worth buying

Sadly I bought this book. It has a different feel to it and you can tell it was not written by L.J Smith. Don't buy it, I'd usually be done with it by now, but it's very disappointing that I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it. There are slight changes, like Meredith's last name, and they are very bothersome. I'm a huge fan of this series, and I saw it and bought it on a wim, just to see what it's like. But I warn you, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It's not wroth wasting money for. All of us true Vampire Diaries fans should email Harper Teen and demand that they hire L.J Smith back or else they just lost millions of buyers.

    Not on my "must reads"

This book is NOT written by L.J Smith. The publishing company took her out of the writing process and got a ghost writer to finish it. I would not recommend this to Damon&Elena fans as the reason L.J Smith was kicked out was because the publishing company didn't like how she put so many Damon&Elena scenes in the rough drafts.

    Craziness

I keep seeing people who say that this book was written by L.J. Smith. Here's the deal, she wrote the manuscript, but Alloy hired a ghostwriter to completely rewrite it. Some of her writing may or may not be in the book. However, what is for sure is that she does not get any say as to what happens in the book or any money from the sales. All future Vampire Diaries books will be written by the ghostwriter and have NONE of L.J.'s writing.

She will be writing a book called Eternity: A Vampire Love Story. This book has NOTHING to do with the Vampire Diaries. It is completely different characters and plot. Not a reworking of anything related to the Vampire Diaries.

If anyone still feels like they have a different understanding of this issue, it is best to check her official website. That is where I got all of my information.

    It was ok

It wasn't that bad. It was a good book if you are a fan of damon and elena getting together, but a bad one if you want bonnie and damon together because they way it was written it looks like that is done and over. All damon cares anout now is keeping elena safe which I think is totally sweet. If you are fan of sefen and elena you guys are gonna be suprised by stefens behavior I know I was. It was an okay book but not one I really liked the ghost writer did an "okay job" I guess but it lacked the real depth and feeling that you usually get from this series. I am personally gonna finish the series but not really because I want to.

    DAMON <3

Lets face it...Elena belongs with Damon not Stefan!! Stefan should just leave them both alone and never come back...no one wants him. Damon and Elena are perfect for each other. Plus Damon is just better in every other way than Stefan!

The publisher is just in it for the money now....

For those who claim that LJ must have "handed over" the / her rights in order for the publisher to continue the series...not true. LJ explains in detail on her website that she was in fact commissioned by the publisher to write this series back in the 1990's which means they own the right to the story and did in fact fire her. Furthermore, according to LJ, she did submit a manuscript for this most recent book prior to being let go and so some of this most recent work (written by someone else) may contain some of those original ideas. It is also true that LJ had intended to bring Elena and Damon together in the series and move on and branch off to other characters. The publisher, wanting to milk the series for all it's worth money wise wanted to continue the triangle with Stephan being the eventual winner. Truly sad when books are continued past their natural conclussion for the sole purpose of making money which is the case here. Read the new ones or not .... but know the facts.

    Disappointed

So ok the book was definitely a step up compared to Phantom I will give it that. Things seems to be back on track character wise which I was definitely pleased to see when I was reading. Though I am still disappointed with the Stefan and Elena endings, that keep happening. Every Vampire Diaries book ends with Stefan and ELena and its getting old, so very OLD. That it makes me not want to read anymore. I mean each book talks about a choice to be made but there no choice if she never leaves Stefan! I keep getting excited like OK this is the book where she is gonna finally leave Stefan and it never happens. Stefan makes the story seem very unbelievable. In this book I kind of feel like they are trying to sell me the Stelena relationship and I'm still not buying into it. Its way too Edwardish. Ever since book 1 Stelena supposidly had so much love for one another but what I noticed is they never actually work through ANY of their problems, EVER. Stefan always gets captured and Elena feels sorry for him and goes back to him every time. I know thats suppose to be their obstacle or whatever. But when are they ever gonna discuss the pink elephant in the room, DELENA????? There is no way Stefan should be ok with her and Damon getting freaky with each other LOL. (don't get me wrong I love the the Delena SMUT keep it coming LOL) The only relationship grow and character growth I see is the one between Damon and Elena. I also hate how Stefan is apparently ok with the Damon and Elena having their own relationship. I know in this book Stefan kind of took a stand but did he really??? Oh wait Stefan gets capture for the fifty millionth time because he sucks. Even Edward has never been captured and thats bad LOL. I mean I just hate how Stefan just willingly takes ELena back everytime, even after all these books and all the Delena love making and blood sucking going down. To me thats not love Stefan has for Elena, its more like desperation, that Stefan won't move on. I know when you love someone you forgive them but in this case I think if Stefa truly loved her he would set her free or at least give her permission for her to be with Damon. For Stelena to have been a actual believable relationship it should of never have been rush in book 1 but because its was and he is sooooo desperate 24/7 I rather Elena be with and marry Damon. Damon and Elena seem to have a more mature and healthy relationship. Sure they argue and bicker but thats real and then they make up or make out which ever. Its all good either way. But seriously I can't STRESS ENOUGH that Vampire Diaires NEEDS DELENA. I love the other characters, I'm glad they all played a vital part in this story which is fine. But don't sell me this Stefan prince charming crap where they brush their problems under the rugs over a false love. Give me real love and a real relationship, GIVE ME DELENA!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Disappointed

What made this book series great wasn't just the love triangle between Elena, Stephan, and Damon. It was how descriptive and well writen the story was. The book just seems little off with the different style of writing than the ones i was used to. I like the plot of moonsong but i wasn't into the book like all the otger series.

    Shocked and torn...

Vampire Diaries was my first real long book I read as a kid (I'm now 20). I was so proud of myself for finishing it since I was one of those kids who had trouble reading. But this book and the world it created for me kept me engrossed in it. I'm extremely sad that L.J. Smiths creation was taken from her. She put a lot of work creating this series and for them to take it away is just wrong on a epic scale.
From some of the comments that I read "Stefan" fans like this "NEW" author because they felt that Damon and Elena weren't right together. Personally it's the authors choice who ends up with who. If it was Damon who first appeared in the book you'd probably all be Damon fans. I'm a Damon Fan and even though I like Stefan too I felt Damon should be with Elena. I was really excited that it seemed the book was headed in that direction. I will not be buying this book due to it's not L.J. Smith creation, it's been stolen and ripped from her. To writers their stories are like their children, they're precious. So true L.J Smith Fans should stick by the writer's side.
(No offense to the New writer I'm sure you do good work. I just think that L.J Smith came up with the story and should finish it.)

    Disappointed

After reading this book I can tell a huge difference in the writing. This book was predictable and poorly written. Within the first thirty pages I caught on to what the "villian" of the book was doing to the characters. LJ Smith is the only true writer of The Vampire Diaries, and for her to have gotten this series taken from her is ridiculous. Any one who is a true fan of the series will be able to tell the difference. LJ Smith should have her books back.
